Take Me Home, Country Roads: Women’s Lacrosse Wins 2nd Road Game in 3 Days

MARIETTA, Ohio – Playing two lacrosse games in three days can be a significant challenge, especially in the thick of Ohio Athletic Conference season.

Two road schedule changes forced two road trips in three days for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse. But despite the pair of lengthy trips to Westerville on Wednesday and Marietta on Friday, the Blue Streaks stand at 6-6 overall now on the year.

The Blue Streaks staved off the Pioneers in a 15-13 victory, holding off a fast-pitched Marietta comeback attempt.

Marietta got on the board first after turning away JCU's first three possessions, scoring at 11:20. Less than three minutes later, Shannon Burdick tallied her 30th goal of the year to tie it. The score stood deadlocked for a while before Olivia Gerlach scored off an Olivia Hanulak pass and Anna Spitzer found twine within the last 2:10 of the first quarter.

Marietta found twine early in the second, but that spurred a 4-0 JCU run in which the offense was smooth as caramel. Gerlach tabbed two goals, thanks in part to Hanulak and Lauren Schwartz assists, then Spitzer scored a quick one, and Schwartz hit home to get JCU's lead to 7-3 at the 8:46 mark.

But then Marietta found life, and replied with a 3-0 run. The last laugh of the half belonged to JCU, however, as the Pios transgressed twice, which led to a Shannon Burdick free-position goal at 2:16. And so, JCU headed into half with an 8-5 lead.

The third quarter was one of jabs exchanged. Each team nabbed a free-position goal, with Burdick doing the honors for JCU. Kendall Gessner got a goal before Marietta tallied two goals to slim it to 10-8, which led to a JCU timeout. The break caused a JCU breakthrough with three consecutive goals by Burdick, Spitzer, and Gerlach. Marietta earned one goal to drop the JCU advantage to 13-9.

The Pioneers then kicked it into high gear, slowly siphoning off the lead until the game stood tied at 13-all at 9:53. The upset bid was in full force.

Enter JCU's seniors.

Shannon Burdick, the senior from New York, scored the eventual game-winner at 6:22 off an Olivia Hanulak assist. Less than a minute later, Gerlach, the senior from Pittsburgh, provided an insurance goal.

Mary Doherty won the ensuing draw control to help waste clock, and two Marietta turnovers forced by JCU's defense finalized the conquest.

Burdick and Gerlach steered the ship for JCU with 5 goals apiece in strong efforts, plus a combined 6 groundballs and 5 caused turnovers. Spitzer achieved a hat trick, while Hanulak's 4 assists provided a big boost. Lainey Donalson showed out as usual with 5 draw controls and 4 groundballs.

Josephine Lawler got the win in net with 7 saves.

John Carroll advances to 4-1 on the season in OAC play now with just two games left in the regular season, the first being a critical home showdown with Mount Union on Wednesday.
