Women's Lacrosse Can't Keep Up with Mount Union at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – For the last few seasons, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse has had the Purple Raiders' number.

Mount Union finally got revenge tonight.

The visitors burst John Carroll's bubble at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday evening in JCU's final home game of the regular season in a 16-7 decision.

The Blue Streaks had an opportunity to tie for the Ohio Athletic Conference lead tonight. But the Purple Raiders showcased the skills that have them perched atop the OAC standings with time dwindling in the regular season.

Mount Union's conquest breaks a 4-game winning streak in the series for John Carroll. The loss drops JCU to 6-7 on the year, including 4-2 in OAC play.

Mount Union struck first in the first quarter, but the Blue Streaks were quick to respond. Kendall Gessner found twine off an Anna Spitzer goal just 39 seconds after Mount Union's opener. Gessner scored a goal off a Hannah Rust pass immediately following a Mount Union yellow card for the 2-1 lead at the 7:01 mark. Madison Polaski joined the party a few minutes later, pushing the lead to 3-1. The Purple Raiders scored late in the stanza to set the margin at 3-2 JCU after one.

Mount Union enjoyed a slight edge in the second quarter, slowly gaining momentum. The Purple Raiders erased the lead as the teams traded tallies, with Shannon Burdick earning a free-position goal and then a marker off a Gessner assist. Mount Union held a slight 6-5 lead at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union's defense clamped down and pressured JCU's transitions. The Blue Streaks struggled to find space to work and passing lanes, while the Raiders worked methodically on offense.

The Purple Raiders tallied five goals in the third quarter before John Carroll's offense could muster a response. Mount Union's 11-5 lead would be too much to overcome for the Blue Streaks. Burdick tallied goal #37 of the year late in the third quarter, but JCU still trailed 11-6 after three.

Mount Union scored the critical first goal of the quarter, though Gessner got a tally in response off an Olivia Hanulak assist. After that, though, the Purple Raiders dominated the fourth quarter and piled it on late while JCU pressed to try to create offense.

Burdick and Gessner led the offense with 3 goals and 4 points apiece. Olivia Gerlach topped the team with 8 draw controls. Lainey Donalson tabbed 5 draw controls, 4 caused turnovers, and 2 groundballs.

John Carroll will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, heading to Muskingum.
