Box Score The John Carroll men's tennis team returned from Florida just over a month ago wincing from a brutal non-conference schedule to left the squad's record at a 1-5 mark.
The lessons learned from that trip continue to pay off now that the Blue Streaks have reached the end of their lost of non-conference opponents. Â The final one was the College of Wooster, and JCu powered past the Fighting Scots, 6-3, at Western Reserve Racquet Club in Streetsboro, Ohio.
Box ScoreThe doubles advantage was well earned by the Blue Streaks. With Wooster winning in the #2 match and John Carroll winning in the #3 match (courtesy of an 8-3 decision by the tandem of
Tyler Cole and
Nick Siciliano), it came down to the #1 match, whereÂ
Jad Abdul-Aal and
David Sinense outlasted Jack Buchan and Davis Elkins, 9-8. It was the seventh consecutive win by Abdul-Aal and Sinense.
When Sinense was forced to retire in the #2 singles match, the outcomes of the other five singles matches would prove crucial, and John Carroll would prevail in four of the five. Abdul-Aal continues his upward surge against regionally ranked opponents, knocking of #19 Titas Bera of Wooster by a 6-4 6-4 score. Abdul-Aal also beat #20 ranked Shouta Fukamachi of Ohio Wesleyan last week.
Also winning wereÂ
Alex Guthrie at #3 (where he rallied from a 6-1 first set loss to take the match), Siciliano in straight sets at #4, and Cole at #5 in an exceptionally close match were the Blue Streak sophomore prevailed in the tiebreker 10-5.
John Carroll is now an even 6-6 on the seaosn, while Wooster fell to 9-9.
