Men’s Track & Field Competes At Both Mount Union & Augustana In Last Chance Meet Opportunities

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois & ALLIANCE, Ohio – With just one week away from the outdoor national championships, the Blue Streaks took advantage of this last week of the regular season.

On Wednesday, May 14th, a small group of the athletes traveled to Augustana College for the Midwest Twilight Final Qualifier in Rock Island, Illinois, while another group competed at the Mount Union Last Chance Meet hosted by the University of Mount Union on Thursday, May 15th. 

The Blue Streaks looked to close out the regular season on a high note before lacing the spikes up in prep for more championship racing.

Looking at some of the notable performances at the Augustana Midwest Twilight Final Qualifier, first year Sam Su would get things rolling as he would place ninth overall in the men's 1500 meter run, finishing with a time of 3:53.64. 

Junior Brody Hanlon would make an appearance in the men's 400 meter dash as he would place 29th overall with a time of 51.36 seconds. 

Another junior who would compete at Augustana was Max Grillo. He would finish 17th overall in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.00. 

In one of the most exciting finishes, the men's 4x400 meter relay of Tyler Gast, Dustin Horner, Tony Tirado, and Basheer Alramahi would punch their tickets to the national championships next week as they would finish third overall with a time of 3:10.60. This time puts them at eighth in NCAA Division III. 

In the field events, senior Matthew Russo would make a couple of appearances in the men's shot put and discus throw. He would place 12th overall in the shot, earning a mark of 14.94 meters. In the discus, he would earn a new personal best of 49.91 meters to place second. 

Moving on to the next day at Mount Union, first year Ben Herczog would make his first ever appearance in the men's decathlon, earning a total of 5,409 points to place fourth overall. 

In the men's 400 meter dash, senior Mick Doyle would be the first Blue Streak sprinter to cross the finish line as he would place sixth overall with a new personal best of 49.08 seconds, followed by senior Victor Ononogbo placing seventh with a time of 49.90 seconds, which is also a new personal best. Ian Paul (50.62 seconds) would also earn a new personal best in the event as well, placing 13th overall. 

Doyle and Ononogbo would also earn top 20 finishes in the men's 200 meter dash, earning new personal bests to close out their careers in the Blue & Gold, as well as the 100 meter dash races. Ethan Show would sprint to a new personal best in the men's 200 meter dash, placing 11th overall with a time of 22.24 seconds. 

It was a successful week for the men as they will now prepare for next week's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships held at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The meet will take place on Thursday to Saturday, May 22-24. Meet information and qualifications will be announced on Sunday, May 18th in the evening.
