Women's Lacrosse Picks Up Critical Victory over Baldwin Wallace

The Blue Streaks celebrated the All-Decade Game with a Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Women's Lacrosse earned a big-time win over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue Streaks secured a key Ohio Athletic Conference win with a 13-9 conquest of the Yellow Jackets.

With the victory during the 10-Year Anniversary Game, the Blue Streaks advance to 12-0, one short of tying the program's best start (2021, 13 wins).

"We were just really excited to show BW that we weren't the same team as we were last year," said defender Jill McDonnell. "We kind of made a 180 and even though we were 11-0 going into it, we knew that this was going to be a gritty game and we had to fight our second battles through and through and that's what we did."

Mary Grace Godleski got the Blue Streaks on the board. After a BW response, JCU fired up a 3-0 run to end the quarter, with Godleski and Olivia Hanulak finishing the quarter with two goals apiece.

Kenzie Krom and Hanulak kept up the pressure in the second quarter, helping JCU take a 6-1 lead. But then the Yellow Jackets started to find some momentum.

Baldwin Wallace went on a 4-1 run to get right back in the game, though a Daisy Thompson free-position goal provided a bright spot. John Carroll still say ahead by a pair of goals at halftime, 7-5.

During the intermission, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse honored the program's legends via the All-Decade Team. Undoubtedly, it was fantastic to have a who's who of Blue Streak lacrosse players in the house.

"I was just excited to be amongst the best of John Carroll. It was really awesome," said McDonnell. "The way the team has shown their support to me tonight was really motivating for me to continue on and I am just excited that I can be that person in this program. Overall, super excited for the years to come."

Abby Cassidy got JCU started in the third quarter, working from right to left with a horizontal dodge and firing home top right. Riley Knapp provided a beautiful goal, as well, beating the netminder five-hole to up the advantage to four goals, which held through the fourth quarter.

Baldwin Wallace tried to stay in the game, finally getting back on the board after a lengthy hiatus. Enter Abby Cassidy.

The Medina native fired home a pass from Anna Spitzer at the 12-minute mark. Just a couple of minutes later, Cassidy galloped nearly the length of the field to rip home a goal. JCU answered right back.

Knapp and Spitzer scored for JCU in response, but Hanulak provided important passes to make it possible. The goals seemed to break the will of the Yellow Jackets, as Baldwin Wallace could not muster a response until it was too late.

Olivia Hanulak topped the team with 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists) and 7 groundballs. Cassidy also nabbed a hat trick. Knapp enjoyed a nice day with 2 goals, 9 draw controls, and 4 groundballs. Rachel Kroeger made 8 saves in net.
