Men’s Track & Field Travels To Wooster & Wilmington For Split Squad Weekend

WOOSTER & WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Blue Streaks return to the track as they took on the first split squad weekend of the outdoor season.

The team traveled to the Wooster Invitational hosted by the College of Wooster both Friday and Saturday, while a small contingent of the throwers competed at the Jenna Strong Track & Field Invitational #1 hosted by Wilmington College. 

For most, it was the first weekend of competition since the OAC Indoor Championships at the end of February and ultimately, this weekend ended up being a huge step in the right direction for the team. 

At the Wooster Invitational, the men took home the meet title, scoring a total of 132.50 points.

The day got started with the field events starting at 11:00 am as the men's high jump was the most well-represented for the Blue Streaks. Senior Luke Frazier would place first overall, leaping to a mark of 1.98 meters. Sophomore Jeremy Frazao wouldn't be too far behind from his teammate as he would place third with a mark of 1.87 meters. First year AJ Haddox would set a new personal best with a mark of 1.82 meters, placing fourth overall. 

The track events would start two hours later as the men's 4x100 meter relay consisting of Ryan Anderson, Basheer Alramahi, Mick Doyle, and Ethan Show would win the event with a time of 41.83 seconds to kick off the day. 

In the men's 1500 run, first year Sam Su would win the event with a time of 3:59.11, followed by senior Dominic Delmoro, clocking in at 3:59.77 placing second. Rounding up the top ten were senior Jett Wieber (4:01.94) and Nate Julien (4:02.77) placing fifth and sixth overall. 

Turning to the men's 400 meter dash, junior Basheer Alramahi would come back and compete as he would place first overall with a time of 47.14 seconds. First year Reece Bacak placed sixth overall with a time of 50.69 seconds, followed by Brendan Root placing 13th overall, finishing with a time of 51.70 seconds, a new personal best for the sophomore. Root would also run a new personal best in the 200 meter dash, running 23.33 seconds. 

The men's 800 meter run was an exciting one to watch as junior Ian Paul would lead for the Blue Streaks as he would place second overall with a time of 1:55.28. First year Grant Preto (1:59.28) and sophomore Chris Whiting (2:00.31) would place sixth and seventh respectively. 

A pair of athletes would score personal bests in the 400 meter hurdles as first years Ben Herczog (58.96 seconds) and Jakson Mazzulo (1:00.73) placed fifth and seventh overall. 

In the men's 5000 meter run, first year Joey Naiman ran 15:18.18, placing second overall for the Blue Streaks. Senior Jack Root would place himself in the top five, clocking in at 15:42.87 to place fifth overall. 

To conclude the day, the men's 4x400 meter relay consisting of Tyler Gast, Ian Paul, Max Grillo, and Basheer Alramahi placed first overall with a time of 3:18.65. 

At the Jenna Strong Track & Field Invitational, a small group of throwers competed at the meet hosted by Wilmington College. 

In the men's hammer throw, senior Matthew Russo would lead for the men as he would place eighth overall with a mark of 46.05 meters. He would later return for the discus throw and win the event with a mark of 45.00 meters. First year Troy Buehner (40.05 meters) and Moose Frombach (39.59 meters) would earn personal bests in the hammer throw, placing themselves in the top 15. 

It was a solid weekend for the Blue Streaks as they will now turn their attention to next weekend. They will be traveling to Alliance, Ohio for the John Homon Invite hosted by the University of Mount Union and the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University. Both meets will take place on Saturday, April 12th. Meet information will be posted next week.
