Men’s Track & Field Competes At Georgia Tech And Baldwin Wallace On Easter Weekend

ATLANTA, Georgia & BEREA, Ohio – It was a Blue Streaks vs Yellow Jackets meet week as the John Carroll Men's Track & Field program traveled to both Georgia Tech and Baldwin Wallace for another split squad weekend. 

A small contingent of the sprinters traveled to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational, while most of the team attended the Sparky Adams Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.

The men finished with a team score of 87 points, placing third overall as a team at the Sparky Adams Invite. The Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace took home the victory with a total score of 191 points. 

At the Georgia Tech Invite, the men's 4x400 meter relay made an appearance for the third time this outdoor season. The team of Tyler Gast, Mick Doyle, Victor Ononogbo, and Basheer Alramahi placed 12th overall, finishing with a time of 3:13.01. This is the fastest time the relay has run this season. 

Alramahi would also make an appearance in the 400 meter dash and place fourth overall with a time of 47.02 seconds against some of the best in all divisions. 

Several performances at the Sparky Adams Invitational were personal bests, as well as top OAC marks. 

To kick things off, in the field events, senior Matthew Russo would earn a personal best in the men's discus throw with a mark of 48.27 meters, placing fourth overall for the Blue Streaks. He would also collect his second personal best of the weekend in the men's shot put, earning a third place finish with a mark of 15.19 meters. 

In the men's javelin throw, senior Alec Gorman would be the top placer for the team as he would finish third overall with a mark of 40.74 meters, followed by first year Troy Buehner collecting a seventh place finish, throwing with a mark of 33.39 meters. 

Buehner would also earn a new personal best in the men's hammer throw, earning a 16th place finish with a mark of 40.74 meters. Sophomore Moose Frombach added a new personal best to his name, placing 11th overall with a mark of 43.60 meters. 

Moving on to the running events, the duo of Charlie Payne and James Johnson would make an appearance in the 3000 meter steeplechase. For Payne, it was his first steeple appearance of the outdoor season, while Johnson would make his second. 

Charlie would be the first Blue Streak to cross the finish line as he would place fourth overall with a time of 9:47.96, followed by James who would place sixth with a time of 10:09.27. 

In the men's 1500 meter run, senior Jett Wieber led for the Blue Streaks throughout the race as he would place second overall with a time of 3:58.37. Three more Blue Streak runners would place in the top 15 including Joey Naiman (4:02.54), Tommy Naiman (4:03.85), and Grant Preto (4:09.84). 

Matteo Taillet would be the lone Blue Streak in the men's 100 meter dash final as he would place fifth overall, clocking in at 11.01 seconds. 

The men's 800 meter run was well-represented as junior Ian Paul would be the first Blue Streak runner to cross the finish line, running 1:54.36 to place second overall. The next few runners would place themselves in the top 20 including Mike Hvizdos (1:55.56), Sam Su (1:57.39), Josh Ackerman (1:57.78), Max Grillo (1:58.19), and Johnny Peters (1:59.41). 

In the men's 400 meter hurdles, first year Ben Herczog would place 11th overall with a time of 1:01.33 to conclude his day of competition. 

To conclude, in the men's 5000 meter run, senior Barrett Scheatzle would make his outdoor debut as he would place second overall with a time of 15:07.97, followed by first year Matthew Dienes placing third with a time of 15:34.55. Phil Coury (15:44.18) and Brian Standley (16:22.39) would round up the next few spots for the Blue Streaks. 

The men will return to competition next Thursday, April 24th as they will compete at the Walsh Invitational hosted by the University of Mount Union at Kehres Stadium. Meet information will be posted next week.
