Men’s Track & Field Competes In Four Meet Split Squad Weekend

Blue Streaks Compete In Split Squad Weekend At GVSU, BW, Kent State, And All-Ohio
BEREA, ALLENDALE, KENT, & WESTERVILLE – For the second straight weekend, the Blue Streaks traveled to four meets throughout the weekend. These meets included the GVSU Big Meet, the BW Mid-February Meet, the Doug Raymond Invitational, and the DIII All-Ohio Championships.

This was another opportunity for the men to secure top marks in the conference and place themselves in the mix against some of the best in Ohio and Division III.

To kick the weekend off, the men traveled to Berea, Ohio to their crosstown rival at Baldwin Wallace for the BW Mid-February Meet.

In the men's weight throw, senior Matthew Russo would secure a fourth place finish with a mark of 14.74 meters, followed by sophomore Moose Frombach (13.87 Meters) and first year Troy Buehner (13.78 Meters) finishing seventh and eighth place. Buehner would also earn a new personal best in the shot put with a mark of 13.51 meters. 

Senior George Wilson made his first appearance for the Blue Streaks this indoor season in the high jump and would earn a second place finish with a mark of 1.80 meters. 

In the running events, senior Evan Piscitani would lead the way for the men as he would win the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:10.88, followed by sophomore Josh Ackerman running 1:10.95. Sophomore Brendan Root would finish third with a time of 1:11.31. 

First year Ryan Anderson would return to the track and secure a new personal best in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.79 seconds to finish second. 

Lastly, in the men's 1000 meter run, junior Max Grillo would also return to the track coming off of injury and win the event with a time of 2:36.91. Sophomore Chris Whiting would follow with a time of 2:38.95 to place second. 

At the GVSU Big Meet, a small contingent of Blue Streaks competed against the best in the country in all divisions. 

Senior Michael Hvizdos would start the weekend off for the men as he would compete in the early section of the men's 800 meter run and clock in at 1:56.05 to place 15th overall. 

Next, in the men's mile, first year Sam Su would continue his progress as he would earn a new personal best in the event with a time of 4:16.13 to finish 23rd overall. Sophomore Nate Julien would earn a 35th place finish and run 4:18.19. 

Senior Dominic Delmoro would make an appearance in the 3000 meter run and place 30th overall with a time of 8:39.02. 

To conclude the weekend, the men's distance medley relay of Michael Hvizdos, Brody Hanlon, Grant Preto, and Sam Su would run 10:09.80 to place 15th overall. 

At the Doug Raymond invitational, for the first time this indoor season, senior Ryan Champa would run the 5000 meter run and clock in at 15:07.22 to place fourth overall. 

On Saturday, February 15th, the Blue Streaks then traveled to the Division III All-Ohio Indoor Championships hosted by Otterbein University. 

The men would finish with 39 points, placing seventh overall as a team against some of Ohio's best. 

Fifth year senior Jimmy Kartsonas would bounce back in the 60 meter hurdles and place third overall with a time of 8.37 seconds. 

Two Blue Streak athletes would secure top 10 finishes in the 200 meter dash including Basheer Alramahi (22.07 seconds) and Reece Bacak (22.99 seconds) placing second and 10th overall. 

The men's 4x400 meter relay including Basheer Alramahi, Tyler Gast, Tony Tirado, & Colby Humbert would win the event with a time of 3:20.78. 

Next up for the Blue Streaks will be the Greater Cleveland Classic on Friday, February 21st hosted by Case Western Reserve University, just a week before the 2025 OAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
