Women's Tennis Conquers Capital at Short Family Tennis Center

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In the first match of the campaign played within the friendly confines of the Short Family Tennis Center, John Carroll Women's Tennis cruised.

The weather was a tad cold, but the sun softened it, allowing for the first home outdoor match of the season for JCU.

John Carroll took advantage of the weather, dominating a 9-0 match against the Capital Comets.

Caroline Chandler and Kayley Gimbel made quick work of their foes at No. 3 doubles to start. The veteran tandem rolled to a swift 8-0 conquest to open the day with a win. Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati kept the good times going with an 8-5 win at No. 2.

The No. 1 match took the longest, as Madeline Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren encountered a tough foe at the top spot. The star JCU duo fought hard for an 8-7 win thanks to an 8-6 tiebreaker.

"Starting off the match and going up 7-4, we had a lot of confidence," said Kavenagh. "And then there were some things that happened with line calls that were beyond our control, so we let a couple games come back. Knowing we were able to get up, that gave us confidence to finish out the win."

Chandler again did quick work in her singles match. The Iowa native rolled past her foe at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0. Sgambati then clinched the team win with a rapid-fire win, 6-0, 6-2. Kavenagh kept the fun going, catapulting to a crisp 6-1, 6-0 win.

"Before the match, we talked about the wind, because it's a windy day today," said Kavenagh. "So, using the wind to my advantage, especially since she was a lefty, I was able to prioritize my shots towards her weaker shots to get the ball to slide off the court."

Deren was the next to capture a win, doing so with a 6-0, 6-2 score at No. 2 singles. Kayley Gimbel opened with a narrow 6-4 set one win before finding a groove in the second set, 6-0. Kolb capped off the day with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.

"It's so nice, as a freshman, this is my first time playing on these courts. It was really nice to have the crowd here today," Kavenagh said.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action on Sunday. The Short Family Tennis Center will see John Carroll host the University of Rochester at noon.
