Women's Tennis Battles Fiercely But Drops Non-Conference Match to Rochester

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a sunny day at the Short Family Tennis Center, John Carroll Women's Tennis competed at home for the second time in as many days.

The result differed from Saturday, however, as Sunday's match ended in a 5-4 loss.

The defeat concluded a 5-match winning streak for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll opened with a conquest at No. 2 doubles. Felicity Kolb and Sarah Sgambati worked well together for a fantastic 8-3 victory for starters. Rochester evened things up with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Kayley Gimbel and Caroline Chandler.

The Yellowjackets and Blue Streaks dueled intensely for the advantage in the final doubles match. Evelyn Deren and Madeline Kavenagh stood behind, 3-6, before hitting their stride. JCU's top duo fired ahead to a 7-6 lead, but the Yellowjackets' tandem caught fire to win, 8-7, thanks to an 8-6 tiebreaker.

The deficit for the hosts stretched with the next two singles results. Sgambati battled but accepted a 1-6, 4-6 loss at No. 2. In the top singles bout, Kavenagh dropped the opening set, 3-6, before roaring back for a set two conquest, 6-3. The freshman worked hard in the third set, but lost a 1-6 result.

The match result was decided with a marathon No. 2 war. Deren worked very hard in her match, which was a comeback. Her foe swarmed early with a 6-3 opening set, but Deren battled back to force a third set with a 6-4 conquest. In the deciding set, Deren's foe outlasted her in a 6-3 decision.

Kolb got the Blue Streaks in the win column in singles with a fantastic victory at No. 4. The sophomore started with a 6-2 win in the first set before dropping a 2-6 loss in the second stanza. In the tiebreaker, the Illinois native dominated, to the tune of a 10-1 conquest.

No. 5 required a tiebreaker, as well. Gimbel snuck past her opponent, 6-4, before Rochester returned the favor in the second set, 7-5. In the deciding tiebreaker, the graduate student rolled, to the tune of a 10-3 triumph.

Finally, at No. 6, Caroline Chandler also required a tiebreaker set. The Iowa City native dropped the opener, 5-7, before firing back in the second set, 6-3. In the tiebreaker to end the day for JCU, the veteran held on for a clutch 10-6 victory.

The competition today should be ample preparation for another strong foe on the schedule, as Ohio Northern is next up on the slate. The Blue Streaks will head to Ohio Northern next Saturday.
