Women's Lacrosse Fires Past Marietta on Senior & Alumnae Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Senior & Alumnae Day festivities made for an energetic few hours at Don Shula Stadium.

Luckily, the amped atmosphere, combined with a talented crew of Blue Streaks, resulted in a 20-9 for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

Before the game, the Blue Streaks honored Madison Polaski, Olivia Hanulak, Lauren Schwartz, Madelyn Pietrek, and Maddy Eifert. This collection of seniors have seen an Ohio Athletic Conference Championship, along with years of intense competition. Their leadership and willingness to embrace change while growing will leave an imprint on the women's lacrosse program for years to come.

But, the celebration continued with a dominant victory over the Marietta Pioneers. All seniors contributed pivotal minutes and left their mark on the statistics sheet, showing how key this core group truly is.

Off the opening draw, Riley Knapp was able to secure possession and dish the ball to Kathleen Cagney. Soon after, Cagney re-located Knapp, leading to the first goal of the game. Seconds later, the Blue Streaks were able to capitalize on the efforts of Hannah Weiss, leading to a quick pass to Cagney, ending in a swift goal from Anna Spitzer. The Blue Streaks set the pace of the game, making it difficult for the Pioneers to answer.

But, Marietta adjusted, and was able to tally its first girl after getting settled on the offensive side of things. Maggie Downard got the Pioneers on the board, followed by some continued energy in the form of a goal thanks to Casey Roader. However, this brief taste of momentum was short-lived.

Hanulak was the catalyst for the Blue Streaks, stopping any signs of fire from the Pioneers with a goal in the eighth minute. Spitzer followed suit again, with Vivian Rung tallying a goal as the first quarter dwindled down. After that, Cagney took advantage of some open space to keep the scoring advantage on John Carroll's side. With that, the opening quarter ended with the Blue Streaks up 6-2.

With a strong first bout of play for John Carroll, the rest of the game was clearly dictated by the Blue Streaks. The squad continued to play the game that belonged to them. Defenders were aggressive on groundball pickups, the midfield was tenacious on draw controls and the offensive side of the ball was clean and fundamental.

The remainder of the game was filled with dominance by the Blue Streaks. Hanulak finished the day with five goals, a career-high for a single game. Schwartz was seen on the stats sheet with another career record, as the senior tallied four assists on the day.

Other members of the team solidified the notion of young talent within the program. Knapp worked with intensity in the midfield, scoring six goals, grabbing three groundballs and securing five draws. Eifert executed her speciality skills in the center circle, bringing in eight draw controls. Cagney also inflated the stats sheets, with three goals, three assists, three groundballs and three draw controls. Spitzer was diverse on the offensive side of things, tallying four goals.

Overall, John Carroll spread the wealth throughout the game, resulting in a triumphant win over the  Pioneers. The sights and sounds of senior day festivities helped contribute to a new level of confidence and drive for the Blue Streaks.

With a significant victory tonight, John Carroll looks to continue the winning streaks with their last regular season game of the year against Mount Union. The Blue Streaks will host the Purple Raiders on their home turf on Wednesday, April 24 at 7 pm.
