Women's Tennis Clips LeTourneau to Complete South Carolina Trip

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – A late schedule switch led to the most exciting match to date for John Carroll Women's Tennis.

JCU's previous opponent, Roanoke, was forced to cancel on Friday, leaving the Blue Streaks with an opening. And so, LeTourneau University of Texas stepped onto the court with JCU on Friday evening at Chaplin Tennis Center on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

In a very close contest, the Blue Streaks came out victorious with a 5-4 conquest of the YellowJackets, celebrating International Women's Day with style.

Doubles placed John Carroll in the hole. Madeline Kavenagh and Sarah Sgambati lost a narrow 8-6 affair at No. 1. Peyton Crumpler and Kayley Gimbel experienced an 8-2 defeat at No. 3. But a key victory by Felicity Kolb and Evelyn Deren, 8-4, gave the Streaks hope.

Kavenagh fought tooth and nail at the top singles spot. The Akron native won the first set handily, 6-1, before her quest for a sweep was foiled, 6-7 (4-10). But her resiliency showed in the tiebreaker set with a clutch 10-4 victory.

No. 2 singles and No. 6 singles saw defeats for JCU, as Sgambati (5-7, 2-6) and Caroline Chandler (3-6, 4-6) narrowly lost battles.

But JCU still got the job done. Kolb cruised at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-1. Gimbel also didn't experience a ton of trouble at No. 5, 6-0, 6-4.

Deren needed some extra time in her opening set, but secured a major 7-5 opening set win. A simpler set two followed, with a 6-2 conquest.

And so the Blue Streaks walked away with a nice win to end the spring break trip on a high note.

John Carroll will return home with a 2-5 overall record, 2-2 in South Carolina. Weather-permitting, Lourdes University will be JCU's next foe on Sunday, March 17.
