Women's Lacrosse Strolls to Victory over Grove City

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Following a slow start to the year in which John Carroll Women's Lacrosse dropped their first five games of the season, the Blue Streaks dug deep and have now won back-to-back victories following their 18-10 victory against the Grove City Wolverines.

Offense was the story of the game, as nine different Blue Streaks found the back of the net as they outshot the Wolverines, 41-26.

Following a back-and-forth start to the game in which each team committed three turnovers, Kendall Gessner hammered home the first goal of the game to put the Blue Streaks up 1-0. Moments later, Lainey Donalson went top shelf to extend the Blue Streak lead to two.

Grove City responded a minute later with a goal from Madison Nazigian, but the Blue Streaks were quick to answer, as Gessner earned her second goal of the game.

After JCU surrendered a goal, John Carroll's Madison Polaski scored her first goal of the year to make it 4-2. Gessner was yet again making her imprint on the game, as she came away with the assist.

The onslaught continued as John Carroll ended with a pair of goals from Donalson and Gessner to conclude a dominating first quarter of play.

The defense wasn't as strong in the second quarter, as the teams allowed a combined ten goals. Grove City opened the period with a goal from Mara Polczynski, which was quickly countered by four consecutive Blue Streak goals to bring the score to 10-3. Gessner added onto her brilliant performance by adding a goal and assist to her total. She led all scorers for the game, as she finished with six goals while tacking on two assists.

"I think today we went out and played for each other," says Gessner. "We had a rough preseason but I feel we are finally coming out on top."

Yet, the Wolverines' offense kept them in the game as goals from Meredith Basham, Polczynski and Nazigian brought them within four to end the half. John Carroll led by four goals at the break, 11-7.

The second half started similarly to the first, as Olivia Hanulak and Gessner each found the back of the net following a couple of Wolverine turnovers to extend the Blue Streak lead to five.

John Carroll's Angelina Rotunno got in on the action, as she scored her first game of the year to make it 15-7.

Following a successful clear attempt, John Carroll's Polaski earned her second goal of the game to extend the lead to 10.

John Carroll shut down any chance of a Grove City comeback in the third quarter as they blanked the Wolverines 6-0 to take a 17-7 lead into the fourth.

The Wolverines outscored the Blue Streaks 3-1 in the fourth, as John Carroll finished with a wire-to-wire 18-10 victory over Grove City.

Grove City's inability to successfully clear was the determining factor, as the Wolverines finished just 17-of-28 in that stat. Meanwhile, the Blue Streaks finished with an efficient 24-of-29 in clears. The Blue Streaks also outshot the Wolverines 41-26 while also committing just 17 turnovers compared to Grove City's 27.

The Blue and Gold will return in one week to host Baldwin Wallace in a 7:00 P.M. matchup at Don Shula Stadium.

Editor's Note: A special thank you to the Grove City Women's Lacrosse team for writing hand-written notes to the JCU Women's Lacrosse team and distributing them after the game. The Blue Streaks are very appreciative of this gesture and are very touched. Best of luck to the Wolverines the rest of the season!
