Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away Late in Rivalry Win over Baldwin Wallace

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - On a cold and windy night at Don Shula Stadium, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse emerged victorious after a sixty-minute battle with the Yellow Jackets.

John Carroll surrendered the game's first three goals but then went on to win, 13-8.

The Blue Streaks won on a chilly night dedicated to Morgan's Message and raising awareness for mental health.

"This recognizes that it's more than just a game," said senior Lainey Donalson. "We came out here knowing that we were playing for something bigger than being student-athletes, but also celebrating the lives lost due to suicide and mental health problems stemming from athletics. We played with love and the hope that the stigma will end at some point.

"Also, Baldwin Wallace has a Morgan's Message group, so whoever you play for, we play for the same cause. We recognize that it's more than a game, we're all human. We all suffer eventually and have some sort of mental health challenges. [In terms of lacrosse] they're a really competitive team and a great opponent, but I think we wanted it more for a lot of different reasons."

The Blue Streaks came in with a 2-5 record on the season. After losing their first five games, the Blue Streaks have won their past three contests.

The Yellow Jackets entered with a record of 3-6. In a similar fashion to John Carroll, Baldwin Wallace got off to a slow start but had won two of their last three games.

The first eight minutes of the game were controlled by Baldwin Wallace. The defense of the Yellow Jackets kept the Blue Streaks at bay and they found the back of the net three times. Baldwin Wallace led 3-0 at the 6:40 mark in the first quarter. The first goal for John Carroll was scored by Madison Polaski with 6:19 left.

The Blue Streaks continued to narrow the gap on the scoreboard in the following minutes as Olivia Gerlach and Lainey Donalson each netted a goal. Donalson's goal came with 4:54 remaining in the quarter and tied the game at 3-3.

Then, two goals scored by Sophia Leuma propelled the Yellow Jackets back in front 5-3. The first came in the final minutes of the first quarter and the second came at the 13:54 mark.

The response from John Carroll was strong as the blue and gold went on a 3-1 run to get a 6-5 lead with 3:12 left in the first half. Shannon Burdick scored two goals during the run, including the one that put John Carroll on top.

Not to be outdone, the Yellow Jackets tied the game at six apiece just over a minute later. After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes, the score at halftime remained 6-6.

While the air may have been around freezing temperatures the entire night, the Blue Streaks' offense was red hot to start the third quarter.

They scored the first three goals and took a 9-6 lead with 9:01 remaining. Burdick, Olivia Gerlach, and Anna Spitzer scored for the Blue Streaks.

Once again, the Yellow Jackets offered a quick response. They brought the deficit back down to one after two goals.

After Baldwin Wallace made it 9-8, it was all John Carroll from that point on. The Blue Streaks scored the next four goals and cruised to their first OAC win of the season.

Burdick and Gerlach each netted four goals in the winning effort. Donalson added two goals as well. Kendall Gessner and Olivia Hanulak each recorded two assists.

After picking up their third win of the season and the first in the OAC, next up for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse is a home matchup with Ohio Northern University this Saturday. It is slated to start at 1 pm at Shula Stadium.

Saturday will be plenty special, celebrating the team's successful senior class.
