Women's Lacrosse Falters at The College of Wooster in Season Opener

WOOSTER, Ohio – John Carroll Women's Lacrosse was eager to take the field for the first time of the 2023 season. High morale and energy were felt as the Blue Streaks took the field in Wooster, setting the stage for an intense opening matchup.

Despite a valiant effort, the Blue Streaks suffered a 14-8 loss, in part to the Scot's 9-0 second-half run.

In the opening period of play, the Blue Streaks looked to get on the board until Olivia Hanulak found the back of the net with five minutes left in the first.

With some added fuel and momentum, Lauren Schwartz found Anna Spitzer for a period-ending goal that gave John Carroll their second goal of the evening to Wooster's three.

After shaking out the season-opener nerves in the first period, the Blue Streaks looked more like themselves in the second slot of play. A minute and a half into the second period, Olivia Gerlach snuck one past Ashley Reynolds of Wooster, evening the score at 3-3.

Gerlach kept her foot on the gas, netting her second goal of the evening just 15 seconds later.

John Carroll had the competitive advantage, but continued to stay disciplined as he progressed. An aggressive, relentless defense made offensive opportunities difficult for the Scots.

The team cohesiveness continued to increase with another goal from Kendall Gessner. That set JCU ahead, 5-4, entering the second half.

At the turn of the half, Wooster seemed to reorganize their offensive strategy, netting nine goals in the second half. The Blue Streaks were unable to answer until the final ten minutes of the game.

Shannon Burdick added two goals in the fourth period, and Gessner tallied another. Caylin Perryman would be the last to score for the Blue Streaks, leaving their final goal count at eight.

Even with an offensive push in the fourth period, John Carroll's fight against a dwindling clock made it difficult to comeback from the deficit.

Several Blue Streaks fared well in the season-opener. Aside from those that tallied goals for the offense, Mary Doherty was able to fight for three ground balls and six draw controls.

Jaimey Hogan held the defense with two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Josephine Lawler protected the Blue Streak net with six saves in her collegiate debut.

While the outcome wasn't ideal, John Carroll showcased significant amounts of potential for the remainder of the season.

The Blue Streaks look to get in the win column in their next game at Kenyon College. John Carroll heads Gambier, OH for a 2:30 p.m. game on Saturday.
