Women's Lacrosse Stumbles at Kenyon in Saturday Matinee

GAMBIER, Ohio -- John Carroll Women's Lacrosse took a jaunt south for a non-conference matchup against a talented crew of student-athletes at Kenyon College.

The Blue Streaks could not best the Owls, falling to the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Champions by a score of 17-4.

Despite the loss, intentional, early-season challenges will only help the Blue Streaks determine and finalize their systematic approach.

John Carroll was subject to Kenyon's high-powered offense, leading to a 5-1 deficit at the end of the first period. Anna Spitzer scored the lone goal for the Blue Streaks within the last 50 seconds of the first slot of play.

With some hope alive, the Blue and Gold began the second period with a relentless drive.

But, the Owls kept their foot on the gas, netting four goals before the Blue Streaks could respond late in the second period. Olivia Gerlach provided the relief for John Carroll, scoring her third goal of the season to put the score at 9-2. Gerlach emphasized her offensive presence with a quick dish to Shannon Burdick, who would score John Carroll's third goal of the afternoon.

By the end of the period, the score stood at 10-3, Kenyon's offense dictating the majority of the dynamic on the field.

In the third period, John Carroll made a goalie change, as Olivia Munding assumed her position in net for the second half of the game. Munding and her defense showcased a disciplined effort, but Kenyon's commanding lineup proved to be a tall task nonetheless.

Burdick tallied her second goal of the game (her fourth of the season)  in the third period, which would be the last time the Blue Streaks got on the board.

In the final period, John Carroll still put up a commendable fight, highlighting a Blue Streak mentality for grit and tenacity. Madelyn Pietrek was able to grab two ground balls and stand her ground amongst Kenyon's powerful offensive attack.

Olivia Munding tallied four saves on the day and her counterpart Josephine Lawler tallied six in their respective halves.

The Blue Streaks are set to feel the familiar atmosphere of Don Shula Stadium in their next matchup against Oberlin College. John Carroll will host the Yeowomen at 6:00 p.m. for their home-opener, which will be High School Day, welcoming local high schoolers to take in the game.
