Women's Swimming & Diving Roars Past Yellow Jackets on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- As a cold wind swirled outside, John Carroll Women's Swimming & Diving enjoyed a perfectly warm Senior Day in the Johnson Natatorium.

The Blue Streaks fired off a 185-105 victory over Baldwin Wallace on Saturday. 

The Blue Streaks now stand 3-1 on the year in dual meets, including 2-1 in the OAC. 

"I am so proud of our women's team," said Head Coach Tanner Barton. "I've watched these seniors develop into excellent student-athletes over the past two seasons, and I couldn't be more proud of them. Our team put up a great effort today to get a quality win over Baldwin Wallace."

The morning started off excellently for the Blue & Gold with a 1-2 conquest in the 200 Medley Relay. Spenser Kale, Ashley Lynch, Rachel Halapchuk, and Anna Glass won the event with a time of 1:56.35. Maddie Panus, Regan Gunzy, Monica McKie, and Kyleah Gaydos combined for a time of 1:56.68 just afterwards. 

Lauren Spence followed with a nice second-place result in the 1000 Free. She clocked in at 11:30.70 for the event. 

JCU tallied a gold-bronze finish in the 200 Free. Ashley Lynch took the gold, touching the wall at 2:01.31. Kyleah Gaydos snagged bronze at 2:07.17. 

The Blue Streaks swept the top three in the 100 Back. Monica McKie roared for first, as the Buffalonian beat the competition with a time of 1:02.48. Kale and Annamarie Habusta followed with excellent marks of 1:03.46 and 1:05.84, respectively. 

John Carroll didn't win the 100 Breaststroke, but they did take 2-3-4. Gunzy got second place in 1:13.60, Bojena Gross followed closely in 1:14.70, and Lynch wrapped things up at 1:19.21.

The Blue & Gold returned to a 1-2-3 conquest in the 200 Fly. Isabella Genise won the day with a time of 2:27.36. Glass and Halaphuck also performed well with respective times of 2:28.86 and 2:31.95. 

Gwyneth Hamilton began what would become an eventful day with a win in the 50 Free. The junior sailed to first with a mark of 25.45. Glass garnered third with a time of 27.01. 

John Carroll secured a sweep of the 1 meter diving, earning a nice cushion. Catherine Steinwachs captured the top spot with 221.62 points. Sarah Hanlon followed with 173.32 and Kathryn Visco wrapped up the sweep with 169.80 points.

After the short diving break, Hamilton returned to the pool and quickly catapulted to first in the 100 Free with a time of 57.17. Glass also clocked in under a minute at 58.10. 

John Carroll didn't get the victory in the 200 Back, but they got plenty of points from a 2-3-4 result. Audrey Prisby was the runner-up with a time of 2:16.21, a second off her career-best mark. McKie (2:20.45) and Panus (2:23.55) trailed her in the results with solid times. 

Gunzy and Gross formed a formidable duo in the 200 Breaststroke. Gunzy gathered second in 2:41.91 and Gross secured third with a time of 2:43.59. 

Gaydos, Spence, and Madeline Jarosz shined in the 500 Free. Gaydos earned second in 5:40.63, Spence touched in at 5:44.70 for third, and Jarosz brought up fourth at 5:54.88. 

Hamilton's outstanding day continued with a time of 1:04.24 for second in the 100 Fly. Halapchuk put forth a time of 1:06.72 for fourth. 

John Carroll increased the cushion further in the 3 meter diving. Steinwachs took the cake again with a score of 209.62. Visco counted second with 177.37 points. Hanlon wired in for third with 164.40 points. 

Kale and Elsie Connell celebrated Senior Day with a great effort in the 100 IM. Kale clocked a time of 1:11.61 for third, and Connell tallied a time of 1:11.73 for fourth.

John Carroll wrapped the day with a triumph in the 200 Free Relay. Hamilton, Panus, Halapchuk, and Lynch worked together for a time of 1:46.60. 

With the win in hand, the Blue Streaks will get back to work heading into next weekend. John Carroll will head to face Wilmington to close out the regular season on Saturday.
