Walter's Brilliant Goal and DelGiudice's Clutch Save Earn Women's Soccer Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Danielle DelGiudice saved the day but it was Gabriella Walter that scored the goal.

After nearly 70 minutes of scoreless play, Walter cracked the scoreboard for the John Carroll University Women's Soccer team and gave them a 1-0 lead.

Then, for the next 20 minutes, DelGiudice was tasked with protecting that lead. DelGiudice made three saves, including a strike from the left side with 29 seconds to play that protected the shutout and secured the win.

"Watching her grow over the last three years has been great," Head Coach Michael Marich said of DelGiudice. "All the work she has put in, it has paid off for us."

The Blue Streaks cashed in to win 1-0 and to improve to 2-0 on the season. This is the second time in three seasons JCU has started out 2-0 in conference play.

DelGiudice made 10 saves and recorded her sixth career shutout and second of the 2020-21 campaign.

"Anytime you can get a shutout, it's a great accomplishment," Marich said. "Great to see a young defensive line and keep a zero on the scoreboard. Danielle had a few huge saves at the end of the first half and end of the game, which was phenomenal."

Through the first 45 minutes, the Blue Streaks tallied four shots, none of which came on target. Meanwhile, Mount Union peppered Danielle DelGiudice with four shots on goal, marking eight shots total.

In the second half, JCU fired five on goal. It wasn't until Walter capitalized on a header off a corner kick from Macey Malinky that the ball finally found the back of the net. It took Walter two tries before the third time was the charm, resulting in a lucky game-winner.

"They were pressing us all game," Marich said. "Being able to go up a goal was huge for us. It was a big swing in the game. We came close on the first set-piece and to be able to finish the second one, was a huge momentum change. It was great to see the girls go ahead on a goal like that."

For the game, the Blue and Gold took 11 shots on Mount Union goalkeeper Claudia Wilson. Brittany Dufalla and Maura Palmer each took a crack at the net, but Wilson saved both shots.

Next up, John Carroll will play its third game of the season against Capital University in Bexley.
