Women's Soccer Stumbles in Road Loss to Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Women's Soccer team (2-1-0, 2-1,0) fell in its first contest on the road of the 2021 spring season to the Capital University Crusaders (2-0-0, 2-0-0) 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the Blue Streaks' strong start to the season in the first two games, they ultimately could not come out victorious in their first road match against the Capital Crusaders.

Going into the game, goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice had not given up a single goal. That soon ended due to the persistent offense from the Capital Crusaders.

A shot was taken by Olivia Rotolo and DelGiudice was able to make the save, but Kailey Stanisovska followed up and found the middle of the net, giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead at the 26:52 mark in the first half.

The Blue and Gold tried to counter the Crusader's goal with Brittany Dufalla taking a low right shot at the 18:58 mark, but Capital goalkeeper Lauren White saved it from going in the net.

Soon after, Capital continued to build upon their lead courtesy of a goal from Lexi Snider. Snider's goal gave Capital a 2-0 lead at the 37:32 mark of the first half.

John Carroll would not be able to find any more offensive opportunities in the first half resulting in Capital leading 2-0 going into the locker room.

In the first 45 minutes of play, Capital outshot John Carroll 7-3, four of the shots were on goal. John Carroll's offense was led by Dufalla in the first half with three shots, one on goal. DelGiudice recorded two saves and allowed two goals in the first half for the Blue Streaks.

Coming out of the locker room, the Capitals offense built off the momentum from their first two goals of the half.

An unfortunate situation happened for the Blue Streaks at the 49:36 mark of the game. A cross pass from Capital deflected off of John Carroll's defense resulting in an own goal for the Blue Streaks. This gave Capital a 3-0 lead over the Blue and Gold.

Capital kept their offensive rhythm extending into the 68th minute of the game. Forward Aaliyah Breletic found the back of the net off of a header pushing Capital ahead 4-0 over the Blue and Gold.

Soon after the fourth goal, Capital University changed their goalkeeper with 16 minutes left in the match and the Blue Streaks could not find any opportunities on the net.

The Blue Streaks were never able to fully find an offensive spark as they were outshot 20-7 and 12-3 for shots on goal.

Dufalla led the Blue Streaks in shots with three and DelGiudice led the defensive efforts by recording nine saves in the loss for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll will have an opportunity to get back to their winning ways on Thursday, March 25 as they travel Westerville, Ohio to face off against the Otterbein Cardinals in an OAC contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
