Blue Streaks Change Their Stars On Day Two In Florida With Sweep Of Misericordia & Rhodes

Quinn Sobieszczanski (#22)
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Only time will tell of course, but one play late in the proceedings of a back-and-forth affair with Misericordia may not have only altered the course of the game but perhaps the trajectory of the season.

JCU trailed 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Blue Streaks had been down 2-0, 4-1, and 8-5 at various points of the game, but were down by a run with six outs remaining.

The bottom of the sixth began with Olivia Schweiger smacking a lead off single to left field. Lindsay McKnight followed with a double blasted to right center

With no outs and Hannah Mizener at the plate, JCU was hoping to get at least one run across if not two. As fate would have it, an opportunity presented itself to get it done in one swing of the bat.

After Mizener had yanked two foul balls to the left side, one that cleared the fence out of play, she went opposite field with a deep fly ball that chased the Misericordia right fielder toward the fence. She made the catch but fell in the process.

Head coach Nicole Loudin rolled the proverbial dice and not only sent Schweiger home but McKnight as well.  Schweiger scored with ease but the McKnight play would be close. The junior shortstop beat the throw to the plate to give Mizener a two RBI Sacrifice fly and John Carroll a 9-8 lead.

Jenn Patterson, who had been very good in relief (she did not allow a run over the final four innings she worked) got the final three outs for the win.

The top of the line-up - Miranda Noday, Schweiger, McKnight and Mizener -- were a combined 8-12 and drove in seven runs while scoring five. McKnight was a perfect 4-4 batting third.

The victory marked John Carroll's first of the 2018 campaign after dropping the first five games, four of which were by three runs or less (including two by a single run)

Game two on Tuesday was not as adventurous, as Jessica Cook pitched a one-hitter through six innings and survived two runs scored in the seventh to lead the Blue Streaks to a 4-2 win over Rhodes College.

McKnight stayed red hot, singling home Noday (who had reached on a base bit, advanced to second on a sacrifice, and then took third on a wild pitch) in the top of the first for a 1-0 JCU lead.

Big runs came home in the third as Elizabeth Fraas singled home Schweiger and Mizener on a two-out hit through the left side.

Quinn Sobieszczanski provided a major insurance run almost on her own in the top of the seventh. With JCU ahead 3-0, she doubled to lead off the inning, moved over to third on a wild pitch, and then stole home on a double steal with Noday.

Cook allowed two runs on two hits, striking out three and walking one to pick up her first win of 2018.

JCU is now 2-5, and will have an off day before resuming play in the Sunkissed Games on Thursday morning.
