Softball Splits with Wilmington on Senior Day

After the bats were quiet in Game 1, the Blue Streaks burst out for 5 runs in Game 2

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a day honoring Danielle Orendi, Kaylyn Odelli, Kendall Trunzo, Angela Vitantonio, John Carroll Softball snagged a split.

The Blue Streaks dropped a difficult 2-1 loss in the opener, but bounced back for a 9-4 conquest in the second contest.

The bats could not provide enough run support for a Danielle Orendi gem in the first game, but the Blue Streaks fired up the offense to get a win in a nice Kristin Dems outing.

Game 1
John Carroll got on the board in the second inning. Melissa Smith and Izzy Coode clubbed back-to-back doubles to left center to break the ice.

In the meantime, Danielle Orendi cruised through the first few innings, striking out two in each of the first three frames. Wilmington did get a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs in the fourth, but Orendi escaped with a bigtime strikeout.

While Kaylyn Odelli doubled in the fourth and Coode doubled in the fifth, both times JCU stranded the runners. In the top of the sixth, Wilmington made the hosts pay, clipping a 2-run homer to steal the lead.

Coode singled to start the seventh. JCU did hit a couple of deep flyballs, but could not manage to get home the tying run.

Orendi finished with a tough-luck loss, striking out 11 in a fantastic outing. Coode did her best to support, notching 3 hits.

Game 2
In a mirror start of the opening game, the Blue Streaks burst out to a lead in the first inning. Trunzo started off the frame with a double to right field, and soon scored on a Coode RBI double, as the Mentor native kept swinging a hot bat.

With one out in the third inning, Alyssa McPeek tabbed a double to center. The first year came in to score, as who else but Coode clubbed a single to score JCU's second run of the day.

Elizabeth Hohlefelder started the fourth frame with a bunt single. Two outs later, McPeek tapped a single up the middle on a hit that touched second base and scattered into the outfield before Wilmington's infield could cover. With that, JCU's lead stretched to three runs.

All the while, Kristin Dems kept on dealing. The sophomore from Mentor took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Wilmington finally broke it up. The Quakers got two runners in scoring position, but Dems stranded them both.

JCU added a key insurance run in the fifth. Melissa Smith smashed an absolute nuke of a home run over the center field wall. Hohlefelder kept the momentum rolling, as the Dublin, Ohio native smashed a bomb to left field for another solo shot.

The Quakers responded in the top of the sixth, with a 2-run shot to slim the margin to 5-2 JCU. The Quakers didn't end there, trimming the deficit to one run entering the bottom of the inning, chasing Dems in the process. However, after Casey Cash escaped the frame, the resilient Blue Streaks provided more run support.

A bunt single by Emily Graves and a McPeek single started the response. An Odelli triple over the center fielder's head, plating a pair. Even better, Coode kept up her unworldly doubleheader, blasting a 2-run homer to center field. With a 5-run lead, Cash closed things out for the Blue Streaks. Wilmington did load the bases, but the junior managed to get the final out without allowing a run.

Izzy Coode's day at the dish was exceptional: 6-for-7 with 5 RBIs, 3 doubles, and 1 homer. Alyssa McPeek also flashed at the plate in the second game with a 3-for-4 outing. Dems got the win in the circle, while Cash garnered the save.

Next Up
John Carroll has just one doubleheader left on the schedule, hosting Baldwin Wallace next Saturday to finish out the campaign.
