Pivotal Play Spirals JCU To Loss In Women's Lacrosse League Opener

John Carroll may always remember Rule 4, Section 9, Item F.

According to the official NCAA women's lacrosse rules book, a goal is not scored when "the field umpire has ruled that the shot or follow-through is dangerous".

With John Carroll trailing Capital 11-9 a third of the way into the second half, Gina Vilsack scored a goal that appeared to pull the Blue Streaks to within a single tally.

The goal was not only disallowed due to Rule 4, Section 9, Item F, but the subsequent yellow card led to a man up advantage for the Crusaders, who cashed in, regained momentum and scored six of the next seven tallies to win by a 19-13 count.

Juniors Grace Curatolo and Meghan Harte registered four goals apiece for the Blue Streaks while Gina Vilsack scored three times in the losing effort.

Just over one minute into the contest, Curatolo jump started the offense by weaving her way past the Crusaders' defenders for an unassisted goal, her 21st of the campaign. Capital responded with three goals of its own to put JCU in a 3-1 hole, and force the home team to take a timeout with 20:52 left to play in the first half.

The momentum game stayed true to its form thanks to Colleen Grombala's free position score and Harte's 65th career goal. Kathryn Walton answered by single-handedly outscoring the Blue Streaks with two more goals to give her a total of five in the first half alone.

In the closing moments of the opening period, JCU shook off a Kara Hines score thanks to two additional goals and an early hat trick for Harte. The junior found the back of the net one more time but her team trailed 10-7 at the intermission.

A stagnant start from the Crusaders' offense paved way to a quick 2-0 rally courtesy of freshman Colleen Grombala and Curatolo in the first nine minutes of the second half.

Then came the pivotal play involving Vilsack and the follow through.
Brianna Rampi, Regan Hanood, Makenna Ozenghar and Victoria Husain each tallied a goal in a span of five minutes and 55 seconds to yield a 14-9 advantage with 14:56 remaining, their largest of the game.
Curatolo stopped the bleeding with her third score to end the opposition's 4-0 scoring run.
Although Capital maintained at least a four-goal lead for the final 17:08 of the contest, the Blue Streaks showed flashes of positive play thanks to a quartet of goals between the scoring tandem comprised of Vilsack and Curatolo.
Next up, JCU travels to Meadville, PA to take on Allegheny College at 6 PM from the Robertson Complex. The Blue and Gold will face the Gators for the first time in program history.
