Women's Lacrosse Pulls Off Sudden Victory In Final Non-League Game

A late push by Allegheny was outlasted as Meghan Harte netted a sudden-victory goal to give the Blue Streaks their first-ever sudden victory overtime win.

The John Carroll University women's lacrosse team topped the Allegheny College Gators (4-3, 0-1 NCAC) on Wednesday night, 15-14, in Meadville, Pa.

With the win, the Blue Streaks advance to 5-3, culminating their 2017 non-conference slate.

JCU was led by freshman Colleen Grombala, who had a career-best four-goal performance to lead the Blue Streaks offensively. Junior Gina Vilsack closely followed with three goals, netting at least three goals in a game for the seventh time this season.

The Blue Streaks started the match by netting two goals within the first two minutes, only to be outlasted by Allegheny's Maddie Olson, who scored three straight goals of her own.

The trio of Vilsack, Sarah Cilano and Alexis Guage combined to net three goals to regain the lead, pushing JCU toward a 7-2 run to round out the half.

Allegheny then came out in the second half by bursting out to a 5-2 goal run. The Blue Streaks kept themselves in the game with the support of an offensive consistency from Grombala and Vilsack.

The two teams went back-and-forth with a little over three minutes to go, capped by Vilsack finding the back of the net with 45 seconds to go in regulation.

1:51 seconds into the overtime period, Meghan Harte scored the game-winner to give JCU a sudden-victory win, its first in program history. It wasthe Blue Streaks' first overtime win of any kind since topping Baldwin Wallace, 15-13, on April 15, 2015, under the old rules in which a full six minutes were played without a "golden goal".

JCU held a slight edge (16-15) in draw controls, led by Brooke McQuinn with eight. McQuinn also caused six turnovers to lead the team.

Elyssa Zablo had a career best nine saves, including one on a free position shot in the first minute of overtime that prevented Allegheny from capturing the win.

Up next, JCU will travel to Alliance, Ohio next Wednesday to take on defending conference champion University of Mount Union at 7 p.m. from Mount Union Stadium.
