After giving up an early goal, John Carroll women's lacrosse took the lead and would not relinquish it, spoiling Ohio Wesleyan's season and home opener.
The Blue Streaks topped the Battling Bishops, 16-8, on Wednesday in Delaware, Ohio. John Carroll improves to a 2-0 record, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 0-1.
Gina Vilsack turned in a five-goal performance, assisting on two other scores for 10 points.
Brooke McQuinn scored three times for JCU.
Sarah Cilano,
Grace Curatolo, and
Colleen Grombala each had two goals on the afternoon. In her debut in goal,
Elyssa Zablo had six saves.
John Carroll outshot Ohio Wesleyan, 39-24, and won the ground ball battle, 24-17. The Blue Streaks caused five turnovers as well. The Blue and Gold played a disciplined game, with no penalties attributed to JCU in the entire contest. John Carroll has only been penalized once through two games.
After Sloane Baumgartner opened the scoring four minutes in, John Carroll ripped off four consecutive goals over a 14 minute period. Harte (24:04), Vilsack (18:12) and Guage (12:48) each scored during the run, capped off by McQuinn's free position goal with 10:07 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan would score twice more before the end of the half, but McQuinn put the exclamation point on the first 30 minutes by burying a pass from
Farrah Nelson with seven seconds to play. JCu led OWU,
Vilsack scored three minutes into the second half. Cilano scored two minutes later, making it an 8-4 game. A free-position goal by Vilsack and another score from Grombala put some distance between the teams, but OWU fought back.
With under ten minutes to play, OWU cut the lead to 12-8. Twenty-four seconds later, Vilsack scored, erasing all momentum. JCU tacked on four more goals before the final whistle to take the contest by eight goals.
Next up for JCU is a spring break Saturday matchup at home with Wittenberg at 1:00 p.m. before a trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. for a pair of games.
