Box Score A spirited comeback effort by the host John Carroll Blue Streaks tied the game in the final five minutes, but a late goal by visiting Wittenberg gave the Tigers a 16-15 victory in a game that was punctuated by scores in waves.
This was JCU's first loss of the season (2-1). Last year, the Blue Streaks were trailing 12-4 at halftime to the Tigers and ultimately lost by seven. This time around, JCU was trailing 14-9 with 16 minutes remaining in the second half, but took a different path to the finish line. The Blue Streaks used a six goal barrage over the next 12 minutes to knot the game at 15-15.
The deciding goal was tallied by Breanna Donnelly off an assist by Emily Wadds with 1:24 remaining in the contest. JCU could not control possession in the Wittenberg end at any time over those final 84 seconds to create an equalizer opportunity.
Leading the way for the victors was the duo of Becca Joseph and Wadds, who combined for eight goals with four apiece.
Junior
Grace Curatolo had a game-high six goals, which takes her season mark to 13. Fellow junior
Gina Vilsack tallied five goals of her own, followed by
Brooke McQuinn who had three.
Vilsack has now had at least four goals in each game this season, as she is currently sitting at 14 for the season.
Trailing early on by a 2-1 count, the Blue Streaks jumped out to rattle off three straight goals, bringing the score to 4-2.
Wittenberg's offensive power awoke midway through the first half, when the Tigers scored the next six goals, jumping out to an 8-5 lead. Curatolo stopped the onslaught by putting one into the back of the net with 1:44 remaining in the first half.
Curatolo and Vilsack combined to put in two goals in the first three minutes of the second half to onec again give the Blue Streaks the lead at 9-8
The Tigers answered with yet another uninterrupted run of six goals. Wadds had three in a row for Wittenberg, getting all three in a 1:31 span.
With JCU down by five, Vilsack put two in the net and Curatolo added another to bring the Blue Streaks within two.
Following a Rachel Bernard free position open-net goal for Wittenberg following a penalty on the JCU keeper, Curatolo and McQuinn combined for three to tie the match at 15 all.
McQuinn tied her own school record for the most amount of ground balls in a game this afternoon, collecting nine total. Today also saw a tie to a team record in ground balls recovered, as the team collected 43 total as a team.
Up next, the Blue Streaks will travel to Port Charlotte, Fla. to battle Marymount University this Tuesday morning at 10:00 am.
