Box Score If head coach Kristie Maravalli could bottle the final 17 minutes of John Carroll's 63-52 win over Ashford University Friday afternoon, it would just be a question of where to keep it.
Trailing 39-32 with 17 minutes to play, the Blue Streaks allowed just 13 points the rest of the way while scoring 31 of their own.
Beth Switzler scored all eight of her points in that decisive run, aiding the cause which saw
Missy Spahar score a game-high 20 points and
Allie Lustig drop in 18 as the Blue Streaks won their third consecutive game.
It was the second game of the JustAGame Christmas Shootout in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Less than 24 hours removed from a win over Lakeland College, the Blue Streaks had to face off against Ashford, which was coming off a loss to Dakota Wesleyan in the other Thursday night game at the JustAGame Fieldhouse.
The two teams traded blows in the first half, but it would be the Saints that took a 35-32 lead when Quinn Rear knocked down a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half.
Ashford scored the first four points of the second half before John Carroll took over the game. Spahar's lay-up at the 8:30 mark gave John Carroll a 45-44 lead, and the Streaks never trailed again.
That is not to say JCU pulled away. When Rear hit a three-pointer at the 2:07 mark, the Blue Streak lead was a single point at 53-52.
The Saints would not score again. Switzler gave John Carroll a cushion with a quick lay-up at the other end, and then three consecutive Ashford turnovers led to six fast break points for John Carroll that iced the game.
At 8-3, John Carroll is off to its best 11-game start since the 1996-97 season when the Blue Streaks began the year 9-2.
