Women's Basketball Wins at Wooster, Pulling Away Late

Carly Perusek matched a career high in JCU's 6th straight win

WOOSTER, Ohio – While a little close for comfort at times, Wednesday's win over the College of Wooster feels very good for John Carroll Women's Basketball.

The #9 Blue Streaks' sixth straight win in North Coast Athletic Conference play sets up a collision with #8 Denison University on Saturday with bigtime NCAC Tournament implications.

In the meantime, JCU's 74-63 victory improves the Blue & Gold to 20-2 overall, 9-2 in NCAC play.

The Blue Streaks' 20th win marks the eighth time in program history reaching 20 victories in a season. Beth Andrews '15 has now done it as head coach twice (the other time in 2021-22), becoming just the third coach in program history to notch 20 wins in a season twice.

A quick Ava Ryncarz steal and Carly Perusek fastbreak bucket set the tone for a strong first-quarter effort by the Blue Streaks. While Wooster kept it close, Graci Semptimphelter scored early and late in the quarter to help the Blue Streaks stake a 16-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Kaylie McKenney and Bella Houllion took turns with strong paint play in the second quarter. Houllion scored six points in a 90-second stretch late in the half, four off free throws. A Ryncarz triple with 27 seconds left skyrocketed the advantage to 11 at the break, 34-23.

The third quarter proved to be top point producing period of the ballgame, with Wooster clawing back into it. Despite JCU's strong play in the paint and 3-pointers by Ryncarz and Semptimphelter, the Fighting Scots gradually trimmed the lead. At quarter's end, Wooster trailed by just four, 54-50.

A steady dose of Perusek in the paint and Semptimphelter on the outside calmed the waters for JCU. The hosts had no answer for Perusek's physicality on both ends of the floor. The Beaumont native poured in 10 points in the fourth, including JCU's final six points to salt the game away.

Semptimphelter continues to make her case for All-NCAC honors, reaching 20 points for the second time in three games and the fifth time this season overall. Perusek matched her season and career highs with 18 points, adding 7 rebounds. Ryncarz had a quiet night scoring-wise, but matched the 7 boards and tabbed a team-high 4 assists. JCU got the job done at the charity stripe, hitting 17-of-20.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks have a colossal game ahead on Saturday afternoon at #8 Denison (21-1, 10-1). The Big Red have won four straight, and won the previous meeting in University Heights on January 17, 58-41. The Big Red are tied with Ohio Wesleyan atop the NCAC standings at 10-1, one game ahead of JCU at 9-2.
