Bryan Steinmetz made quick work of his opponent in JCU's 29-15 win over Case Reserve

John Carroll trailed by four points with three matches remaining, but used two pins and a forfeit to break away from host Case Western Reserve for a 29-15 victory Tuesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
In the season opening dual match for both schools, youth was served with eight freshmen taking part. In fact, the only two seniors that wrestled on this night for the Blue Streaks lost.
Right off the bat, senior Elie Naoum gave up a five point move in the second period and could not recover in falling 7-4 to Jimmy Millar at 125 pounds.
Freshman Kevin Nycz (pictured, left) restored order for the Blue Streaks, using a series of tilts to record a second period technical fall at 133 pounds (16-1).
Another freshman, Clarence Semple had to be more methodical. He got a takedown in the first period, then held on to win 4-3 at 141 pounds.
In the only match of the night to feature two seniors, Drew Grdella or CWRU never recorded a takedown, but two escapes and riding time overcame a first period takedown by JCU senior Dan Mizener in what was a 3-2 victory by the Spartan senior.
Case took the lead at 157 pounds when freshman Isaac Dukes -- who won a title at the Messiah Invitational in his first collegiate competition -- showed his considerable talents with a 16-6 win over fellow rookie Andrew Schafer.
Junior Devon Jurczak responded with a 5-0 shutout at 165, but the lead was short-lived when Spartans senior BJ Greenman recorded a 17-1 tech fall at 174 to give the home team a 15-11 advantage.
That was when the upper weights took over for JCU. Blue Streak freshman Bryan Steinmetz was impressive in his collegiate dual meet debut, as he pinned sophomore Evan Malone in 2:19.
Sophomore Jim Nemunaitis followed suit in slightly more rapid fashion as he stuck his opponent in 1:41.
Tim Lambert accepted a forfeit at 285 to close out the match.
John Carroll is now 1-0 on the season.
