Women's Lacrosse Upended by Sewanee to Conclude Spring Break

The Blue Streaks drop to 1-3 on the season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The final game of the spring break trip did not go John Carroll's way.

Sewanee, aka the University of the South, handed John Carroll Women's Lacrosse a defeat in the Blue Streaks' third game of spring break, the second on the swing south through Tennessee.

The Blue Streaks lost a 20-11 decision to the Tigers early Friday afternoon.

The game opened off with the Blue Streaks firing a couple goals. Anna Vaccarelli got the scoring started just 99 seconds into the game. A couple minutes later, Kathleen Cagney notched a woman-up goal off an Anna Spitzer pass. Sewanee then ripped three straight goals to take a narrow lead. Mea Musillo slotted a tying goal home just under the 3-minute mark, evening it up at three heading into the second quarter.

Out of the break, JCU's offense kept firing. Mary Grace Godleski and Riley Knapp netted goals within a minute of each other, setting JCU ahead by two goals with 12:31 on the clock.

Then the Tigers took over, roaring for a 7-1 run the rest of the period. A Vaccarrelli tally helped to diminish the damage, but the visitors still trailed by four goals heading into halftime, 10-6.

The Tigers tallied the first two goals out of halftime. While Cagney potted a pair in the third, each time Sewanee provided a response, firing into the fourth quarter ahead, 14-8.

Cagney continued to provide offense, registering three fourth-quarter goals. But JCU could not sustain a run necessary to overcome the lead, and in fact, Sewanee kept adding to the lead despite the Clevelanders' best efforts.

Clears proved to be important, as JCU finished just 10-of-16. JCU actually enjoyed a 29-28 shot advantage, but the Tigers just took better advantage of the opportunities.

Kathleen Cagney was a bright spot, tying a career high with 6 goals. Anna Spitzer provided 5 assists. Riley Knapp tied a career high with 5 caused turnovers, while Jill McDonnell matched her total. Karson Martin notched a career-high 8 draw controls.
