Baseball Battles to Split at #25 Case Western Reserve

Jake Corll's outstanding pitching and JCU's patient bats secured a Game 2 win

CLEVELAND – Late March often makes for some strange baseball, and Saturday certainly fit the bill.

Going against Case Western Reserve University, ranked #25 in the latest ABCA poll, John Carroll Baseball experienced the low of a blowout defeat in the first game before enjoying the elation of a complete domination in game two.

The Blue Streaks split with the Spartans at Nobby's Ballpark, losing 19-5 before roaring back for a 11-0 victory.

Game 1
The powerful Case Western Reserve bats proved to be too much for the Blue Streaks in the first game of the day.

The Spartans got on the board in the first before the Blue Streaks battled back in the third. John Carroll tabbed five straight singles, with George Haracz, Thomas Bates, and Ethan Glossa each notching RBIs. But Case Western Reserve fought back with a 6-hit effort in the third, firing ahead, 5-3.

The Spartans scored one more in the fourth before the teams traded runs in the sixth. A Dylan Sowers RBI single through the left side and a Hararcz RBI walk plated a pair for JCU, but the visitors left the bases loaded.

CWRU answered in force, with a bases-loaded walk and a 2-run single providing insurance runs to the tune of a 9-5 score. CWRU piled it on in the eighth inning to put it out of reach.

Game 2
Sure, the bats exploded for 11 runs. But the story of the game has to start with Jake Corll.

After a rough opening for the JCU staff, the senior did an impeccable job in the second game of the day. The Austintown native logged seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. The veteran did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and stood in control the whole way.

Corll's outstanding performance allowed the JCU bats plenty of room to perform, and the Blue Streak hitters certainly did not disappoint.

Thomas Bates nabbed an RBI single in the first. Following a Haracz single, a CWRU error allowed a pair of Blue Streaks to score in the second. A Jake Monaco RBI groundout sent home another run in the fourth.

The game turned into a laugher in the fifth, starting with a leadoff Brett Krugman dinger over the left field wall. JCU then loaded the bases with a Patrick Sherman HBP, Michael Pollard single, and a Haracz walk. Monaco took four straight balls for an RBI walk. Then Glossa singled up the middle to make it an 8-run ballgame.

RBI walks by Monaco and Glossa in the sixth provided even more breathing room. And a Hauck RBI groundout in the seventh set the final margin at 11.

Austin Miller left no doubt for JCU late and preserved the program's first shutout of the Spartans, a perennial postseason contender, since 2013.

The bats finished with 11 hits and 9 walks. Haracz enjoyed a near flawless day with a 3-for-4 game with 2 runs and 2 walks.
