Baseball Tames Thiel in Senior Day Victory at Schweickert Field

The Blue Streaks' pitchers excelled and the hitters stole runs with smart baserunning

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a cloudy, mild Senior Day, John Carroll Baseball played well from start to finish and took advantage of mistakes to get a fitting victory.

The Blue Streaks downed the Thiel Tomcats on Sunday at Schweickert Field, 6-2.

With the victory, John Carroll advances to 11-5 on the year, including 4-0 in University Heights.

Kiayuan Baskerville got the starting nod and excelled for the Blue Streaks. The Bridgeville, Pennsylvania native was dealing from the start, throwing gas all day long.

John Carroll started the scoring in the fourth inning. Thomas Bates got aboard with a walk to start the frame, advancing to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Chris Bach hit a sharp ball to the third baseman, who could not handle the one-hopper, allowing Bates to score. Jordan Suvak plated Bach on a nice single up the middle.

Jake Monaco got aboard with one out in the fifth frame. A wild pitch hurt the Tomcats, as Monaco got to third on the WP and then scored on an Ethan Glossa sacrifice fly.

A failed pickoff attempt helped JCU score an insurance run in the sixth. Eric Krowl started things off with a single, with Nico Ruoti pinchrunning. The sophomore got to third with the wild pickoff throw and scored on a Suvak sacrifice bunt for a 4-0 lead.

JCU kept pressing the advantage in the seventh. Jake Monaco got aboard with a walk, advanced to second on a failed pickoff, and scored on a double by Glossa that one-hopped the wall in right center. The senior soon stole third and scored on a well-struck Thomas Bates sacrifice fly to right.

Seniors Sam D'Amelio and Jay Rinehart both got in the game in the ninth. D'Amelio notched a nice pinchit single through the left side for his first hit of the year.

Baskerville looked outstanding, especially with a nice lead. After seven strong innings, the star gave way to Michael Perry. The first year provided an inning and two-thirds of relief before senior Zac Tizzano closed it out.

Thank you, Seniors!
