Women's Soccer Ties Penn State Behrend on the Road

Emily Patrzyk's nice work provided the tying tally in the second half

ERIE, Pa. – Perhaps not a household name to Northeast Ohioans, Penn State Behrend is a strong women's soccer program, having made NCAA Tournament appearances in the last two seasons.

A year ago, the Lions dealt JCU a 1-0 defeat in Erie. While it appeared that the hosts might be in position to do the same this year, the Blue Streaks refused to lose.

John Carroll Women's Soccer tallied a 1-1 draw with Penn State Behrend on Sunday afternoon as part of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament.

Just like in the first game of the event, the Blue Streaks allowed the first goal. And similar to the previous game, the tally occurred late in the first half. Penn State Behrend got on the board in the 43rd minute.

However, Madeline Martin made 3 saves in the first stanza, keeping JCU in it. And the Blue Streaks' offense would repay her for the effort.

In the 64th minute, Emily Patrzyk fired home her first goal of the campaign. The star senior beat the defender to a ball over the top. The Twinsburg native played it over the goalie when she came out from the right wing. And thus, the game was tied.

The hosts doubled up JCU on shots in the second half, 11-5, and Patrzyk's goal was the visitors' only shot on goal. But JCU weathered the storm and emerged with a good tie against a strong side.

The Blue Streaks' youth again saw significant playing time in the face of injuries. But veteran stalwarts like Kathryn Shaffer and Julia Niehaus played the full 90 and did fantastic work, as well. Martin finished with 6 saves, playing the whole way.
