Softball Swept by Heidelberg at Home

The Blue Streaks lost both games at Bracken Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Softball hosted Heidelberg at Bracken Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks dropped the opening game, 11-3, in six innings, and then lost the second game, 7-4.

JCU drops to 9-10 on the year with the pair of defeats.

Game 1
The doubleheader started on a nice note for the Blue Streaks. Kendall Trunzo walked to open the frame, getting to second on a sacrifice bunt. Melissa Smith sent her home with a bomb of a double. Elizabeth Hohlefelder got aboard on a single, getting Smith to third. Hohlefelder stole second and importantly drew the throw, which sailed and allowed Smith to score.

While Kristin Dems cruised through the first two innings, the Student Princes responded with a huge third inning. Heidelberg rocketed a game-changing grand slam, stealing a 4-2 lead.

The Student Princes kept the bats hot, scoring 4 runs in the fourth to put things out of reach. JCU did score a run in the fifth, but Heidelberg did not relent, ending the game in the sixth inning via run rule 11-3.

Game 2
While John Carroll made some adjustments, the Blue Streaks could not overcome an early deficit.

Heidelberg fired out to a 3-0 start and never again trailed. A 2-run homer by Melissa Smith narrowed the deficit and provided a fun highlight. However, a 3-run Heidelberg seventh inning put it out of reach.

But JCU didn't quit, as Kendall Trunzo clubbed an RBI double before JCU ran out of outs. Either way, JCU's fight and adjustments were admirable. JCU fought til the very end against a stout Berg team with powerful bats and solid pitching.

Elizabeth Hohlefelder also tabbed an RBI. Danielle Orendi did enjoy some bright spots on the circle, as some of her runs allowed were due to tough luck (such as a couple tweener hits).

Next Up
John Carroll's next scheduled games are on Friday at Geneva at 3:30 and 5:30 pm. After that, JCU will return to Bracken Field on Saturday. The Blue Streaks will host Ohio Northern in a 1 and 3 pm doubleheader.
