Despite 5-Run 5th Inning, Softball Falls to Geneva

JCU lost the first game of the doubleheader, and the second game was called due to darkness

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Bright spots did dot the start of a busy weekend, but John Carroll Softball found itself on the losing end on Friday.

The Blue Streaks lost an 8-6 battle at Geneva College (PA) in the first game, and then ran out of light in the second game, which did not go the mandatory five innings to be counted.

With the defeat, JCU sinks to 9-11 on the season.

Elizabeth Hohlefelder provided a nice start for the Blue Streaks, as the first year clipped an RBI single to right center to begin the ballgame. With Danielle Orendi getting out to a ferocious start, the Blue & Gold appeared off and running.

But the bats slowed against solid Geneva pitching. Orendi exited the game following the third inning with a 1-0 lead in hand, surrendering just one hit and notching five strikeouts. But in the spirit of keeping the ace ready for four conference games in the next two days, Head Coach Tony Scibelli turned to the bullpen. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn't produce the results needed, allowing three runs in the fourth and later four runs in the fifth.

However, it briefly appeared as if it wouldn't matter, as JCU's bats came alive in the fifth. Aided by crucial Geneva errors, the Blue Streaks plated five in the fifth frame, highlighted by a 2-run Kendall Trunzo single. JCU batted around, and hopes were high with a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. But the Golden Tornadoes quickly rallied for the win.

JCU did finish the game with 10 hits, including three by Kaylyn Odelli.
