Blue Streaks Conclude Homestand with Key Capital Sweep

Bobby Bell tallied his 100th and 101st wins as JCU Baseball's manager

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – A pair of wins were mandatory for John Carroll Baseball on Monday. A nefarious forecast prompted a rare 11 am Monday morning start, but with a rise-and-grind mentality, the Blue Streaks got the job done.

The Blue Streaks notched a pair of important victories over the Capital Comets at Schweickert Field, 5-4 and 16-3.

The two wins provide a nice exclamation point to an 8-game homestand on the new turf of Schweickert Field.

Game 1
Capital and John Carroll loaded the bases in the first frame, but only the Comets managed to scratch across a run. JCU knocked on the door again in the second, but didn't break the ice until the third. Connor Mayle clubbed a 1-out double and came into score on an Ethan Glossa single through the left side. Sean Connolly singled to put runners on the corners. Connolly tried to steal second, drawing the throw down, which allowed Glossa to dash home for the go-ahead run.

Leading off the fifth, Michael Persichetti clipped a double to left center and soon stole third. George Haracz hit a hard grounder to the shortstop to score an insurance run for JCU.

In the meantime, Jake Corll settled in nicely until the sixth inning when he ran into trouble. After Corll loaded the bases, he hit a batter to walk in a run. With two outs and the bases juiced, Bobby Bell turned to veteran Owen Gerba. The Saint Ignatius product stepped up in the clutch, getting the third out on an impressive 4-pitch strikeout.

Unfortunately, the Comets managed to tie things up in the seventh, leading Bell to turn to Austin Miller with the bases loaded and two outs. The senior got out of it with a strikeout, keeping the game level.

John Carroll quickly got back out in front in the bottom of the frame. Jack Harmon got aboard with a 1-out walk and Michael Persichetti singled. Haracz hit a single through the right side to score Harmon, and then stole second to set two runners in scoring position. But Capital escaped with a pair of strikeouts to keep the score at 4-3 JCU.

A solo shot over the wall in left center evened the score at 4-4 in the top of the ninth, but JCU didn't flinch. The Blue Streaks loaded the bases with 1 out in the bottom of the ninth, with Jack Harmon and Persichetti walking before Capital intentionally walked Haracz to load the bases. Mayle stood tall and showcased impressive patience, taking a 3-2 pitch for a game-winning RBI walk.

Persichetti's 3-hit game highlighted JCU's efforts at the dish. Austin Miller registered his second win of the season.

And in securing the win, the Blue Streaks delivered Win #100 for Manager Bobby Bell. A great Man of Carroll, Bell has been the perfect manager for this Blue Streaks program over the past six seasons. A humble and effective leader of men, Bell has enjoyed every minute.

"All of the success is due to our great players," said Bell. "I'm just fortunate that the Good Lord blessed me with a job that gives me the best seat in the house. I want to thank my wife and family, and everyone who has made this possible."

Game 2
Perhaps miffed that the opener was a close call, John Carroll revved up the offense in the second game. A 2-run Erik Daugenti double in the opening frame set the tone.

John Carroll busted the game wide open in the second, as Haracz clubbed 2-run double and Daugenti snapped a 2-run triple to help power a 6-run inning in which JCU batted around. With an 8-0 lead, JCU never really looked back.

Kiayuan Baskerville got the starting nod and enjoyed the wiggle room. While the sophomore exit the game in the fifth frame amongst a 3-run Capital effort, Noah Trojanowski shut the door and thus would earn the win. From there, Kevin Holland took the ball and ran with it, pitching 4 clean innings for the save.

JCU's bats were undoubtedly the story of this contest. Daugenti was a homer shy of the cycle, collecting 5 RBIs. Dylan Sowers enjoyed an unforgettable day at the dish with a 5-for-5 effort, highlighted by a double and two stolen bases. Dominic Trivisonno finished 3-for-4 with a career high in hits. Ethan Glossa's work can't be glossed over, either, with 2 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 walks.

And before we wrap up today, a special shoutout goes to Jake Hanzie. During Graduate Student Appreciation Week, it's important to give kudos to Hanzie, who has done an excellent job as Graduate Assistant, especially in his work with the pitching staff. JCU Baseball is grateful for his work.
