Women's Lacrosse Rockets Past Capital with Offensive Explosion

JCU set an OAC Tournament record for goals in the win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – In what can only be described as an offensive onslaught, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse unleashed an explosion of scoring.

In a historic effort, the Blue Streaks scored an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament record 26 goals to roar past the Capital Comets, 26-17. The previous record was 22, last achieved by Capital in the title bout a year ago. Impressively, JCU's 26 goals are the most ever scored against Capital.

With the victory, John Carroll rolls into the OAC Championship on Saturday at Mount Union.

"This win was a full win on and off the field," said Anna Spitzer. "The energy was amazing on the sideline. You can hear them from anyone on the field. We just connected so well today. Nobody was selfish. Most of our goals were assists. Just all over the field we were working well with each other and making each other look good."

Vivian Rung started off the scoring, with an Olivia Hanulak assist. With 6:48 left in the quarter, after a Capital timeout, the two teamed up again. JCU and Capital then traded goals. Riley Knapp fired one home for JCU, coming down the left alley and scoring on a bouncer.

Shortly after Hanulak dipped past a trio of Capital defenders, the grad student passed it to an open Vivian Rung for an early hat trick. JCU's lead stood at 5-3 after the first quarter.

Anna Spitzer got JCU on the board early in the second quarter, scoring on a fast break, with Kathleen Cagney providing the pass. The two switched roles on the next goal, but the offense didn't stop there. Cagney fired home a highlight reel goal, beating the goalie with a trick shovel pass goal. Spitzer found twine shortly after for the 9-3 lead.

Capital ended the 6-goal run shortly after, but that only spawned a 3-goal response by JCU. Knapp, Daisy Thompson, and Spitzer did the honors for JCU. Capital again staunched the bleeding, but JCU's offense was not to be denied, standing in front by plenty at half, 14-7.

Capital did come out swinging in the third quarter, but JCU ended that with a pair of goals, as Spitzer and Hanulak found twine. JCU then found itself in trouble with back-to-back-to-back cards. But Rachel Kroeger made a bigtime save to keep Capital off the board until the very last moments of the kill.

The quarter bogged down at times with a myriad of cards, but it did not lack for offense late. After a Cagney free-position goal, Capital started gaining momentum down the stretch, though Hanulak and Rung scored late to set the margin at 19-13 heading into the fourth quarter.

Grace Osborn continued her offensive onslaught, tabbing the first two goals of the quarter. But Cagney made her presence known with a free-position goal, starting a 3-goal run that helped to put it away. Cagney, Knapp, Spitzer did the job on offense.

Late in the game, it was a scoring party that featured a bevy of career bests. Hanulak achieved a career high in points with nine, while also hitting 200 career points. Spitzer earned career bests in points (12), assists (7), and groundballs (6). Cagney set a new personal best for goals (6).

Abby Cassidy notched 7 points in impressive fashion. Both Riley Knapp and Vivian Rung nabbed 4 goals.

Meghan Weiner played a fantastic game on defense with 7 groundballs (a career best) and 4 caused turnovers. Jill McDonnell achieved 3 caused turnovers and 3 groundballs. In net, Rachel Kroeger accumulated 8 saves.

John Carroll's 26 goals were the most scored by the team since March 27, 2021 in a 26-4 victory over Ohio Northern.

"I've never been in such an amazing group of girls like this before," Spitzer said. "Everybody is just super supportive of each other. A win for one person is a win for everybody. Just seeing everybody get so hype for each other is amazing. It's John Carroll culture."

Next Up
John Carroll will head to Alliance on Saturday, looking for the program's second OAC Championship in program history.

"I feel like it's been a battle not just for this season, but for our past seasons. We've been working for this moment for so long and it's taken a lot of hard times and failures to get to where we are now," said Spitzer. "I am really proud of all of us. We come to practice every day, show up, and hype each other up. It has been a lot of hard work for all of us."
