Men's Lacrosse Battle Past Capital in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal

JCU scored a couple clutch goals late to grab the win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – It was a nerve-wracking game, but John Carroll Men's Lacrosse got the job done.

The Blue Streaks fought past the Capital Comets, 12-11, on Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal.

With the conquest, the Blue Streaks advance to the OAC Tournament Semifinal at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday.

"We kind of shot ourselves in the foot having three conference losses, but we know the type of team that we are," said Josh Lombardo, who keyed the scoring in the second half. "We know that when it comes to playoffs, we have to put our best foot forward and we know we can. Coach said it in the locker room that we are a championship team and we know what it takes to win a championship. We're going to put our heads down and keep playing and overall, playing playoff lacrosse."

The Comets came out of the gates hot, as Mason Spaulding tallied two goals in the first minute. But Billy Paladino and Braden Zarek zoon evened the score. Capital fired back with two more goals, answered again by the Blue Streaks. Brock Schwartz and Billy Paladino evened the score at four apiece heading into the second quarter.

The teams traded goals for the duration of the quarter, with each team tallying two goals. Richard Moran and Zarek fired home the markers for John Carroll. And so, the score stood tied heading into the break.

Like the start of the first half, the second started with a pair of Capital goals. But JCU responded with a pair of goals, with Josh Lombardo doing the damage. The junior's second score was made possible by a nice dodge and a left-to-right move. John Carroll then snagged the lead, as Zarek ripped a low lefty shot that the goalie got a piece but couldn't stop. However, the Comets snuck in a goal at the 28-second mark, tying the game at nine entering the fourth.

John Carroll got on the board first, with Lombardo fooling the goalie on a sidewinder shot to take a lead. The Hawken native scored a crucial goal a couple minutes later at the halfway mark of the period, staying hot.

The defense played well for quite a while in the fourth, but Capital broke through with 3:30 to play after a long drought. After a timeout, John Carroll fired home a critical insurance marker with 1:23 to play, as Sean Keane ripped a goal after a perfect pass from Sean Hogan. But Capital made it interesting, getting a goal with 27 seconds remaining. The Comets won the ensuing faceoff and called a timeout with 14 ticks left. But JCU forced a turnover and escaped unscathed.

Josh Lombardo led the offense with 4 goals and 1 assist. Braden Zarek also finished with 5 points. Camden Uchic topped the team with 4 groundballs. Billy Paladino notched 2 caused turnovers on hustle plays. Devin Holder played very well in net, making 9 saves.

John Carroll will move forwared in the OAC Tournament, heading to Ohio Northern to play in the OAC Semifinal.

"We matched up against ONU recently and fell short in the regular season, but we trust our coaches, we trust our guys, and we really trust our game plan," said Lombardo. "We're going to put in a game plan that is going to help us succeed. We may switch it up or maybe we don't. At the end of the day, we listen to our coaches and they are going to get us to where we need to be and we're going to rely on our teammates to buckle down and play lacrosse."
