Regular Season Wraps Up with Loss to Otterbein for Men's Tennis

JCU won at #1 doubles and #4 singles

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio – The regular season and Ohio Athletic Conference play concluded for John Carroll Men's Tennis. Rain and storms forced the match indoors, unfortunately keeping JCU from playing at the Short Family Tennis Center.

A tough run through league play concluded, as the Blue Streaks dropped a 6-1 defeat to Otterbein University.

With the loss, JCU finishes conference play at 1-3 and at 3-11 overall.

Doubles play came down to the wire. At #3 doubles, Jack Sigler and Phillip Gorun accepted a quick 6-0 defeat. Atop the doubles at #1, Anthony Markello and Dylan Westmeyer fought for a 6-4 conquest.

And so, it would come down to #2 doubles. Luis Wentz and Griffin Millspaugh stood ahead and then lost an opportunity to go for the kill. The veterans did force a tiebreaker, staving off defeat. But the Blue Streaks ran out of steam, losing a 7-1 tiebreaker in a 7-6 decision.

The first domino to fall in singles happened at #6 singles, as Sigler dropped a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Millspaugh fell next at #3 in a 6-3, 6-4 battle that was quick but close. The match was decided with an Otterbein conquest at #5 singles, as Wentz experienced a 6-2, 6-1 loss.

Westmeyer dropped a 6-4, 6-3 defeat next. Markello marked down a 6-3, 6-1 loss, slowing down the stretch. Finally, Phillip Gorun got JCU on the board with a victory. The junior opened with a 6-2 set win, but could not finish off his opponent in a set two defeat, 6-7 (5-7). But in the tiebreaker, Gorun got a 10-5 victory.

Next Up
The Blue Streaks will take part in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament next week. JCU is unofficially the #4 seed, so a trip to #1 seed Ohio Northern will likely be in the cards on Tuesday.
