Women's Lacrosse Dealt First Loss of the Season, Losing in Alliance

The Blue Streaks' 14-game win streak ended in the regular season finale

ALLIANCE – The John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team were handed their first loss of the season on Wednesday against Mount Union.

After a historic 14-game run by the Blue Streaks, the team finally seemed to meet their match in the last regular season game, losing 16-10 to the Purple Raiders.

With this loss, the Blue Streaks will now become the second seed leading into the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and share the OAC Regular Season Championship with the Purple Raiders.

Originally scheduled for a 4 pm game, the start time was pushed back to 5 pm, as the referees were not told the correct gametime by the hosts. After it was sorted out, the two teams finally got to battle it out.

Riley Knapp started the Blue Streaks off with a goal within the first 10 seconds of the game, all while celebrating her birthday. Shortly after, the Purple Raiders responded with two goals, both courtesy of Katie Clark. But the Blue Streaks came to fight, answering with their own pair of goals from Kenzie Krom and a second by Knapp.

The end of the first quarter marked the first momentum shift going to Mount Union, who scored four unanswered goals leading halfway into the second quarter. Freshman Abby Cassidy and graduate student Olivia Hanulak broke the momentum with a few goals leading into halftime. However, the Blue Streaks still trailed by one heading into the second half.

The third quarter was where the Purple Raiders offense truly found their rhythm. Despite an incredible defensive stand from Rachel Kroeger, and Jill McDonnell, Mount Union put up four goals in the third quarter and shut out the Blue Streaks completely.

Unfortunately, this momentum carried into the fourth quarter with Mount Union adding an additional three goals to make the score 14-6. However, just when everyone thought the game would end in a landslide, something changed. About half way through the fourth, the momentum seemed to shift again. The Blue Streaks went on a 4-goal run of their own within the span of just three minutes. The impressive late run was a more familiar sight to the Blue Streak fans, with the team scoring off quick draw controls and in transition.

However, Mount Union had already built up a substantial lead throughout the game, and with time dwindling, the Purple Raiders buried two more goals to seal the win.

Knapp led the team with 3 goals and 7 groundballs, Olivia Hanulak also tabbed 3 points. McDonnell notched 3 caused turnovers and Kroeger made 10 saves.

Next Up
Despite the loss, the Blue Streaks will still head into the OAC Tournament with a bye, and will host the OAC Semifinal at home on Wednesday, April 30.
