Baseball Scuffles as Bats Silent in Sweep

The Purple Raiders handed the Blue Streaks a pair of losses at Schweickert Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Frustrating might be the best word for Tuesday's doubleheader.

John Carroll Baseball could not get the bats going on a chilly day at Schweickert Field, losing two games to first-place Mount Union. JCU managed just 10 hits in 18 innings.

The Blue Streaks fell to 3-3 in conference play with a pair of losses, 5-1 and 5-1.

Game 1
Austin Miller got the starting nod in the first game, starting off with a clean first inning. But five straight baserunners in the second portended doom. The Purple Raiders managed to plate four in the frame, which would be plenty.

Miller pitched clean third and fourth innings before exiting the game after a walk to open the fifth. The senior gave way to Owen Gerba, who masterfully extricated himself from the inning. The sidewinder did allow a run in the sixth, but Noah Trojanowski limited the damage. Luis Arreola and Sam Amodeo also kept the Purple Raiders off the board.

The John Carroll bats experience plenty of frustration in the opening game. While JCU got runners aboard to start the first three innings, the hosts could not do anything with the chances.

Jaired Lehman proved to be nearly unhittable, mowing down 10 straight Streaks from the third through the sixth. JCU finally chased him from the game in the eighth with a single and a walk. A George Haracz RBI double got JCU on the board, but then Chris Phillips turned away three straight to eliminate any hopes of a comeback.

JCU's bullpen was the bright spot in the game, allowing just 1 run in 5 innings of work.

Game 2
The visitors snuck in front in the first inning, as a game-opening walk gave way to an RBI double. After a solid opening, Roger Simon ran into trouble in the third, walking his first two hitters. Sean Connolly checked in and did solid work, though an error allowed Mount Union to add an insurance run.

The Raiders later plated two more with some clutch hitting in the sixth, upping the lead to 4-0, which felt like much more given the struggle to generate any offense.

JCU's bats continued to scuffle in the second game, with just one hit in the opening five innings. Anthony Warner cruised for Mount Union, retiring nine in a row. Connor Mayle and Erik Daugenti got aboard with one out, and they managed to get to third with two outs. But Mount Union's shortstop made a nice play to get the third out.

John Carroll at last got on the board in the eighth. Michael Persichetti started the frame with a single and Haracz followed up with a single of his own. A doubleplay killed much of the momentum, but Ethan Glossa knocked in Persichetti for the game's first run on a nice basehit to right for his 31st run batted in of the season. But JCU's rally ended there.

Noah Trojanowski and Jay Rinehart kept JCU in it late with nice relief efforts.
