Blue Streaks Roll Past Comets On Senior Day In Front Of Home Crowd

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Talk about a statement win.

Celebrating Senior Day on Saturday at Don Shula Stadium, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse dominated the defending Ohio Athletic Conference Champions.

The Blue Streaks owned the game from start to finish, in a simply fantastic victory over the Capital Comets.

"Right now, I am a little bit speechless," said senior defender Meghan Weiner. "I knew coming into this game how much of a power force we've been so far this season. All thanks to the first years coming in and the coaches that we have. We have so much talent all throughout the bench. I don't think I can put into words the feeling that I have right now."

John Carroll punched their foes in the mouth early. Olivia Hanulak provided the opening goal less than two minutes into the match. Draw controls were crucial for JCU early, as a Riley Knapp win on the draw control led to an assist on a Mary Grace Godleski goal just 11 seconds later. Less than a minute later, Abby Cassidy fired home a free-position goal for a quick 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. Capital did rebound with a couple goals, but then Riley Knapp added a tally to make it 4-2. A few minutes later, Capital took a timeout with 4:49 left in the first quarter.

Two minutes later, Kathleen Cagney got in on the scoring, firing home an assist from Hanulak. While Capital responded, JCU got back on the board instantaneously. Cassidy won a draw control and dashed down the field, finding Anna Spitzer for a transition goal. JCU's 6-3 lead held through the remainder of the first.

Spitzer revved up the offense at the start of the second quarter, first off a right to left move off a Vivian Rung pass, then on a rocket shot in transition from a Knapp pass, and finally off another Rung pass. By the time the dust settled, JCU enjoyed a 9-4 lead at the 9-minute mark. Despite a Kenzie Krom goal, Capital took momentum with a 3-1 run.

However, John Carroll headed into halftime with some momentum. Rung took a Cagney pass and found an opening, firing home a goal to propel JCU to an 11-7 lead at half.

With a small bench and playing against JCU's physical defense, the Comets ran out of gas in the third. John Carroll raced out to a 7-1 run to run the clock. Knapp and Rung combined for four of the goals, fired home in impressive fashion. Spitzer, Godleski, and Cassidy all notched nice goals to get JCU up by 10 goals.

Capital did get back into the game somewhat, with three straight goals to end the third quarter. But with an 18-11 lead after three, John Carroll felt very much in control, especially when Cassidy sent home a free-position goal in the first minute of the fourth. Knapp kept on scoring, with a nice tally at the 9-minute mark.

Capital did score a couple late goals, but JCU placed the exclamation mark with a goal at 57 seconds. Godleski took a pass from senior extraordinaire Ellie Fleischer. With the goal, JCU finished off with a 21-13 victory, the largest margin of victory in series history.

Leading for the Blue Streaks in scoring this afternoon was junior Anna Spitzer, who tallied five goals. Following right behind was sophomore Riley Knapp, who would record four goals for the team.

The team would also collect a total of 11 assists against the Comets with six players contributing throughout the game, as well as a total of 41 ground balls.

Meghan would also emphasize how special of a win this was for the program on senior day. "I have so much gratitude for everyone that is here," mentioned Weiner. "A win on senior day is absolutely incredible, especially against Capital. It's what I've been dreaming of for the past four years and this day has lived up to its expectations."

The lockdown defense would propel the Blue Streaks to remain undefeated at 10-0 with a large crowd helping them bring the energy on senior day.
