Defense Smothers Cardinals, as Women's Lacrosse Runs Away with Another W

The Blue Streaks did not allow a second-half goal vs. Otterbein

WESTERVILLE – The march through Ohio Athletic Conference play continued on Wednesday for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

Otterbein hung around for much of the first half, but JCU dominated the third quarter en route to an 11th straight win.

The Blue Streaks remain unbeaten on the year with a 16-5 victory over the Cardinals with an 11-0 overall record, 3-0 in league play.

While Otterbein scored first, JCU enjoyed the better of the play in the first quarter. Kenzie Krom got JCU on the board at the nine-minute mark off a free-position goal, and Abby Cassidy grabbed the lead just 28 seconds later. Then, Riley Knapp picked up a groundball and roared 30 yards down the field, showcasing her speed on a fun transition goal. Olivia Hanulak also showed off her nimble moves with a buzzer beater goal, proving JCU's advantage on clears and transitions.

Hanulak opened the scoring in the second quarter on the free position, and Mary Grace Godleski got in on the fun with a free-position score of her own. But Otterbein hung with it, answering both. Vivian Rung fired hom a nice cutter off a Godleski assist but yet again Otterbein prevented it from becoming a run. But the hosts could only stave off the inevitable for so long.

Hanulak started a 3-goal run, as Godleski and Cassidy also found the back of the net. With that, John Carroll felt more secure, possessing a 10-5 lead at the break.

The defense locked down in the second half, proving why they're statistically the top defensive team in the conference. Otterbein did not score in the third quarter. Or in the fourth, for that matter.

In the meantime, JCU pushed the lead out of range. Cassidy and Rung netted goals in the third quarter while the defense suffocated the Cardinals. A seven-goal lead at the end of the third felt safe.

Back-to-back Cassidy goals to start the fourth definitely put it out of reach. Annalise Caulfield started the running clock, and Godleski completed the scoring.

Cassidy finished with a team-high 6 points, including 5 goals. Mary Grace Godleski and Olivia Hanulak both achieved hat tricks. Mary Wymard notched 2 caused turnovers. Wymard, Jill McDonnell, and Samantha Usterbowski all grabbed 3 groundballs.
