OAC Play Opens with Lopsided Win at Marietta for Women's Lacrosse

John Carroll dominated the second half on the road

MARIETTA – Following the best non-conference result in program history, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse opened Ohio Athletic Conference play with a roar.

While host Marietta College hung around for a while, the Blue Streaks absolutely dominated the second half.

The Blue Streaks routed the Pioneers, 15-3, to advance to 9-0 on the season.

Highlights abounded in the first half, but it was the second half where the Blue & Gold showcased a killer instinct. The women of Kelsey Shewbridge outscored Marietta in the final 30 minutes by a whopping 7-0 margin.

Abby Cassidy was one of the primary catalysts of the offensive explosion in the second half, potting the first and final goals of the third quarter, plus a pair of assists in the fourth. Olivia Hanulak also helped to fire JCU forward with a pair of goals. Plenty of credit must also go to Rachel Kroeger. Marietta received 9 free-position shots in the second half, and failed to convert on all nine.

At the outset of the game, Hanulak got JCU on the board off a pass from Lauren Schwartz. Kenzie Krom fired a nice pass to a cutting Riley Knapp, and the sophomore fired it home for a woman-up goal and JCU's first lead of the day. Hanulak and Cassidy quickly upped the lead to 4-1 near the midpoint of the first on a pair of goals made possible by sweet dodges.

Anna Spitzer notched a goal with one minute left, though Marietta softened the blow by scoring on a free position with 16 seconds left. JCU carried a solid 5-2 lead into the second quarter. John Carroll came out swinging in the first couple minutes of the second, as Kathleen Cagney and Knapp supplemented the lead. Marietta did author a goal in response. But Knapp had the final word of the half at the four-minute mark, with a wonderful spin and quick trigger, sending JCU into the break with an 8-3 advantage.

The lead soon swelled to double digits in the third quarter, and JCU was off and running en route to a total rout of the Pioneers.

Cassidy topped the team with 5 points, including a hat trick, adding 4 GBs. Both Riley Knapp and Olivia Hanulak fired home 4 goals, while Knapp supplemented her stats with 5 draw controls. Kathleen Cagney deserves a healthy heaping of praise after stacking up 7 groundballs and 4 caused turnovers on the statsheet. Both are career highs for the junior from White Plains, New York.

In cage, Rachel Kroeger continued her phenomenal season. The Mentor native registered 10 saves, hitting double digits for the third time this year.
