Volleyball Snags Two Wins at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio – The second weekend of the season is off to a similarly great start as the first for John Carroll Volleyball.

The Blue Streaks tallied two wins on Friday for the second time in as many weeks, besting Oberlin College and Grove City College at the Oberlin Invitational.

During the short road trip west, JCU bested the Yeowomen by set scores of 25-15, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19; and then defeated the Wolverines by set scores of, 25-16, 26-24, 25-21.

John Carroll vs. Oberlin

An efficient offense was the story of the match for the Blue Streaks, as the visitors finished with a .333 hitting percentage.

The opening set pingponged back and forth. Oberlin fought to a tie at 15-all, and that's when the Blue Streaks dropped the hammer. A 5-1 run for JCU proved to be absolutely vital. The Yeowomen did not surrender by any means, clawing back to within one point at 22-21. But JCU finished things off with an Abby Bednar kill, Jessica Liddle service ace, and Oberlin error.

The second set was a far different story, as JCU galloped out of the gates to a 7-1 start. Oberlin tried but could not get off the mat, never coming within five points again. Hailey Williams, Bednar, and Marissa Lynch all heated up, keeping the hosts at an arm's length en route to a 25-15 domination.

Mary Kate Sheehan powered a 6-0 run that propelled JCU to a 10-6 advantage in the early goings of the third. But the Yeowomen answered with an identical 6-point run soon after – made possible by four straight aces – and JCU's lead never reappeared.

The stingy defense promised in the preseason certainly appeared in what would be the deciding set for JCU. A 7-2 John Carroll roll set the visitors ahead, 17-10. Oberlin tried and tried to stave off elimination. But, JCU's relentless defense ensured no such thing. In perhaps a defining moment, after Oberlin scored two straight points to stay alive at 24-19, the Blue Streaks prolonged the rally twice with a pair of improbable plays to keep the ball in the air. That grittiness set up a Sheehan kill to finish off the Yeowomen.

Bednar tallied a season-high 13 kills, while Lynch hit double digits with 11. Haley Nicholson (20) and Tess Humphrey (19) shared the love in the assists category. Olivia Mogyordy continued her strong play with 11 digs.

John Carroll vs. Grove City

Just a week ago, the Blue Streaks confronted the Wolverines. The rematch went even better for the Blue Streaks.

Thanks to a series of 2-point runs, JCU slowly took control of the first set. A 7-1 run down the stretch cemented the outcome, as the Blue Streaks got offense from a variety of sources. It was a great offensive effort by JCU with a .355 hitting percentage.

Grove City rebounded in a big way to start the second set, looking to steal one away from the Blue Streaks. But a quick 4-0 JCU run got the Women of Carroll right back into it. The teams traded points, evening things up at 19. A 4-point JCU jaunt looked to rip the set away from the Wolverines, but then Grove City won five of the next six points to knot it at 24-all. But thankfully for JCU, a pair of attack errors locked it up for JCU.

The Blue Streaks built a small lead near the midpoint of the set, but Grove City narrowed it several times to a single point. Down the stretch, it was a full team effort, as five different Blue Streaks tallied kills. Combined with a very stout defense, it was enough to pull away late, 25-21.

Once again, Bednar led the way with 12 kills. Nicholson (22) and Humphrey (18) again shared the assists spotlight. Mogyordy tallied a team-best 22 digs.
