Cold Spell Leads to Loss at BW for Women's Lacrosse

BEREA – A lengthy dryspell doomed John Carroll Women's Lacrosse on Wednesday.

For the first 34 minutes of the rivalry showdown in Berea, John Carroll and Baldwin Wallace played quite evenly, trading jabs. But the Yellow Jackets found a way to stifle JCU's momentum in the third quarter, and thus earned the Ohio Athletic Conference win.

With a 13-10 loss to Baldwin Wallace, the Blue Streaks' five-game win streak concluded.

The first quarter was a seesaw affair. The scoring started just over a minute into the game, as Olivia Hanulak snuck one in despite the goalie almost saving it. After grabbing the ensuing draw control, Riley Knapp raced down and scored for a quick follow-up.

The Yellow Jackets responded with three straight goals. John Carroll got back on the board near the midway point, as Knapp took a low quick shot after a Lauren Schwartz pass. A few minutes later, Mary Grace Godleski hit a bounceshot. Down the stretch, Hanulak added two goals to JCU's ledger, sending JCU into the break with a narrow 6-5 lead.

The Yellow Jackets raced out in the second quarter for a pair of goals. Godleski concluded the run off a Hanulak assist, though BW provided a response soon after. The final tally of the half happened at the 6-minute mark, as Knapp raced in and scored off a pretty pass from an Anna Spitzer pass.

The score stood deadlocked at halftime at eight apiece, marking the second straight year that the teams battled to a tie at half.

The Blue Streaks got on the board first out of the break at the 11-minute mark. Hanulak surprised the goalie with a clean shot, though the Yellow Jackets tied it back up a minute later, and then snagged the lead a minute after that. The BW advantage grew to two at the 6-minute mark and stretched it to three at the 3-minute mark, leading to a JCU timeout. But despite JCU's best efforts, the deficit remained at three heading into the final stanza.

While the visitors tried to claw back in it with a late Riley Knapp goal, a bigtime comeback did not come together, so the Blue Streaks lost to BW for the first time since 2019.

Draw controls and groundball numbers help tell the story. BW enjoyed an 8-1 advantage in draw controls and a 15-6 margin in groundballs in the second half. JCU's 24 turnovers for the game also hurt. JCU did look good on clears, however, finishing a nice 12-of-13.

Individually, Olivia Hanulak topped the team with 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist). Riley Knapp continued her hot streak with 4 goals, adding a pair of caused turnovers and 3 draw controls. Josephine Lawler notched 7 saves.

Despite the loss, the Blue Streaks still control their destiny in the conference. Four games remain on the slate, and critically, three will be played at Don Shula Stadium. The first of those games will be next Wednesday when JCU hosts Otterbein.
