Cards, Scoring Drought Lead to Loss on Morgan's Message Night for Women's Lacrosse

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Copious yellow cards and a long scoring drought sank John Carroll Women's Lacrosse on Wednesday evening.

Leading by as many as seven goals, the Blue Streaks could not finish things out at Don Shula Stadium against the Otterbein Cardinals.

In a second straight Ohio Athletic Conference defeat, JCU accepted a 14-12 decision to Otterbein.

Just over a minute into the game, Kathleen Cagney dashed towards the net and fired home a Lauren Schwartz goal to open the scoring. On JCU's next possession, Olivia Hanulak ran in from the left side and made it 2-0 quickly. After Otterbein got on the board, JCU rattled off a three-goal run, with Schwartz scoring twice and Vivian Rung finding twine, too.

Otterbein managed to get a goal at the 4-minute mark, but the Blue Streaks responded the same way as before: Firing up a 3-goal run. Schwartz started it with a tally off a marvelous Rung pass, Riley Knapp kept it rolling, and Hanulak provided a definitive exclamation point. The Pine-Richland grad rocketed a free-position goal as the clock expired for an 8-2 lead after the first.

The offenses slowed in the second quarter, as the teams split the scoring. Hanulak dodged and dashed to the crease at 11:56, firing home a great goal. Near the midway point, Maddie Eifert found twine, surprising the netminder with a sidewinder shot. The goal marked Eifert's first goal since her freshman season in 2021.

JCU sat in the driver's seat at halftime with a 10-4 lead, but the Cardinals soon made it a game.

Otterbein came storming out of the halftime break. The Cardinals fired off three consecutive goals to open the quarter, getting right back in it, trailing 10-7.

Kathleen Cagney ended the run, hitting a free-position goal at the 3-minute mark. JCU's transition offense struck soon after thanks to a draw control win by Knapp. Anna Spitzer raced in and scored a pretty goal. Though Otterbein got the final tally of the quarter, a 12-8 lead felt nice heading into the fourth.

But the lead soon evaporated. The Cardinals took advantage of free position attempts and a woman-up, quickly narrowing the gap to just one goal with just under 10 minutes to play. At the 8-minute mark, Otterbein tied it and then took their first lead of the night. JCU burned a timeout in response, trailing for the first time all night. A couple minutes later, Otterbein got that critical insurance goal.

Yellow cards sunk the Blue Streaks. Six yellow cards were assessed to John Carroll in the fourth quarter, severely hindering the comeback attempt. Otterbein did not get any cards in the fourth quarter.

Lauren Schwartz and Olivia Hanulak both accrued hat tricks on offense, while Hanulak's 8 draw controls stood as a team high. Meghan Weiner topped the team with 5 groundballs, followed by Kathleen Cagney with four. Hanulak and Jill McDonnell both tabbed 3 caused turnovers.

John Carroll will look to bounce back quickly, as a critical OAC showdown is next on the calendar. Perennial conference contender Capital will welcome the Blue Streaks for a Saturday showdown, with the start set for 1 pm in Bexley.
