Softball Loses Two 1-Run Games in Sweep at Otterbein

WESTERVILLE – With Mother Nature wreaking havoc on the schedule recently, John Carroll Softball played a rare Monday afternoon doubleheader at the Otterbein Cardinals.

To close out a 6-game roadstand, John Carroll lost a pair of one-run games. John Carroll lost the opener in a pitchers' duel, 1-0, and fell just short of a comeback in the second game, 3-2.

Three of JCU's five losses during the roadswing were by one or two runs.

Game 1
JCU's Danielle Orendi and Otterbein's Riley Hamm put on quite the show in the opener.

The two pitchers spun outstanding dueling gems in a battle between two strong hurlers in the lowest scoring game of the season to date. Each team put runners on base over the course of the contest, but the pitchers stranded a total of 11.

Lexie Genovese threatened in the second inning, notching her third double of the year with two outs. Orendi walked to put another aboard, but Otterbein escaped. Orendi found herself in a jam in the third, as a baserunner got into scoring position with one out. But the crafty senior kept Otterbein off the board. The Cardinals tabbed two singles in the fourth and again got a runner to third, but again the righty escaped unharmed.

Orendi's lone mistake occurred in the fifth inning with a leadoff homer over the wall in left center. In the sixth, JCU looked poised to tie it, getting two runners in scoring position with no outs. But the Cardinals snuck out of it. Taylor Morrison singled in the seventh to keep it interesting, but never got to second.

Orendi surpassed 200 career strikeouts with 6 K's in 6 innings.

Game 2
The bats at last found pop early in the second contest. A 2-run double and an RBI single got the Cardinals on the board early with a 3-0 lead.

Serena Paterno provided an answer in the next half-inning. The senior skied a 2-1 offering over the wall in left center, leading to a mobbing at home plate by her teammates. The solo shot marked JCU's third homer of the campaign.

The pitchers settled in from that point. Kristen Dems did not allow another hit until the fifth. The Cardinals did get a runner to second with two outs in the fourth, but the Mentor native gathered a strikeout to end the inning.

In the sixth, JCU got another run back. Elaina Rodriguez got things started with a two-out single, and Gabby Hougan kept it rolling with a nice single through the left side. Melissa Smith then came up in the clutch, slotting a single up the middle to plate Rodriguez. Otterbein made a pitching change and got out of the jam with a 3-2 lead still intact.

After Dems cruised through the sixth, the Blue Streaks threatened in their last ups. Genovese opened the frame with a single to begin things, and got to second on a groundout. But the Cardinals' Kiley King shut the door for the save.
