Comets' Offensive Firepower Downs Women's Lacrosse

BEXLEY – This season, the Ohio Athletic Conference has been a meatgrinder for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

The Blue Streaks lost a third straight conference contest on Saturday on the road, firing ahead before the Comets got rolling.

Capital dealt John Carroll a 20-14 defeat in Bexley, dropping to 6-6 overall on the year, 2-3 in OAC play.

Jill McDonnell got the scoring started with a near coast-to-coast goal just 49 seconds into the game. About a minute later, the Blue Streaks scored in transition again. Madison Polaski set up Anna Spitzer perfectly for a two-goal lead, resulting in a Capital timeout.

Capital got on the board at the 12-minute mark, though JCU responded a few minutes later. Riley Knapp set up Kathleen Cagney nicely. A minute later, Olivia Hanulak got on the statsheet. The party kept on rolling, as Vivian Rung sent home a goal off a Lauren Schwartz pass. With 4:35 left, Madison Polaski scored from close in on the left side, taking a Cagney pass in transition. Capital got one goal before the first quarter horn, but JCU held a nice 6-2 lead after one.

The Comets dominated the second quarter. Capital scored nine straight, as Andi Henry and Grace Osborn opened the floodgates for the Comets. Karson Martin sent home a Hanulak pass to stop the bleeding, but JCU trailed by four goals. Two more Capital tallies late in the half pushed the margin to 13-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, John Carroll made up a bit of ground, but not enough. Rung and Anna Spitzer notched free-position goals and Karson Martin found twine late in the quarter. But the lead still stood at five for Capital through three.

Capital sandwiched a Spitzer tally with two goals on either side, ending any hopes of a late run, though JCU did score a few late to make it a bit closer.

Anna Spitzer steered the offense with a team-high 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists). Five different Blue Streaks tabbed 2 caused turnovers. Riley Knapp led the team with 5 draw controls. Josephine Lawler made 5 saves in cage for JCU in the first half, while Olivia Munding tallied 7 stops in the second half.
