Women's Lacrosse Narrowly Beats Sewanee to Close Out Spring Break

SEWANEE, Tenn. – In a tense ending to spring break, John Carroll Women's Lacrosse held on for a road victory.

Facing off with the host Tigers, the Blue Streaks made a late stop to emerge with a win over Sewanee: The University Of The South.

John Carroll's 18-17 conquest handed Sewanee its first loss of the year and sent the Streaks home from Tennessee happy. The conquest marks JCU's first 1-goal win since 2019.

On top of the joy of winning the closely contested, physical affair, the Blue Streaks celebrated an individual milestone for the team's fifth-year star. Kendall Gessner surpassed the 100-goal milestone, becoming the seventh Blue Streak in program history to achieve the feat. She is 19 goals away from surpassing Brooke McQuinn '19 for sixth on the all-time scoring list at JCU.

John Carroll raced out to a quick start, scoring the first four goals. Olivia Hanulak kicked off the offense, firing home a woman-up goal off a centering pass from Lauren Schwartz just three minutes in. Near the midway mark, Gessner hit a nice left-handed shot. Just 37 seconds later, Riley Knapp got a bouncer to go from in front, following a nice Schwartz feed. Gessner cut to the right and scored her 100th goal off a pretty pass from Anna Spitzer at the 5:39 mark. Sewanee called timeout in response.

Three of the next four goals were scored by the Tigers, with a Spitzer free-position tally sandwiched between. But the Blue Streaks still led after the first, 5-3.

Sewanee continued to chip away at the lead in the second period, narrowing the gap to one. Two more goals by Gessner kept JCU in front. At the midpoint of the period, Kathleen Cagney surprised the netminder off a Schwartz pass, and then Schwartz bounced a free-position marker into the bottom left of the net to push the advantage back to 9-6. Gessner later hit a marvelous shot as she was moving back for another goal.

But the Tigers found twine twice in the last two minutes to narrow the gap to 11-10 at the break.

Spitzer started the scoring in the third, but Sewanee responded with two straight to deadlock the contest at 11. Vivian Rung got in on the action off a Schwartz feed to take the lead back for JCU, with Knapp following it up off a Spitzer pass.

That wasn't enough to insulate JCU, as Sewanee fired off three goals in the final four minutes, including two in the last 40 seconds, to take the lead for the first time. The Tigers carried a precipitous 14-13 lead into the fourth.

Less than 90 seconds into the period, Gessner charged in on a free-position attempt and found twine for a tie. Sewanee soon retook the lead, but then it was JCU's turn for a run. Spitzer and Hanulak took turns launching missiles on deep shots, and then Knapp hit a nice high-low goal off a Gessner feed.

A seesaw ending followed from there. The Tigers concluded JCU's run with a response at 6:27, but JCU's defense stepped up and bought time for an insurance tally in the form of a Knapp goal off a Hanulak helper. Sewanee slimmed the margin to one with a free-position goal a minute later, which set up for a tense final two minutes.

Possession pingponged down the stretch, and Sewanee forced a critical turnover with 30 seconds left to get one last chance. The Tigers set up behind the net, but the JCU defense never let Sewanee center it, forcing a turnover with a few ticks left to preserve the victory.

Gessner led all scorers with 6 goals and 7 points. Knapp's 4 goals, including the game-winner, proved to be vital, as were her team-high 3 groundballs. Both Spitzer and Hanulak contributed 5-point games. Maddy Eifert led the squad with 6 draw controls. Mary Wymard had a nice day with 2 groundballs and 2 caused turnovers. Josephine Lawler made 6 saves.

John Carroll snaps a lengthy skid in 1-goal games, as the Blue Streaks entered 0-5 in their last five games decided by a lone goal. The last time JCU won such a contest was in the 2019 season opener, beating Kenyon College, 11-10, in overtime. JCU owns a 3-9 record all-time in 1-goal games.

The Blue Streaks are back in action in nine days on Saturday, March 16. JCU will host Albion College, which should offer a strong test after the Blue Streaks eked out a 9-7 win on the road last year vs. the Britons.
