Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away from Albion at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a sunny, beautiful St. Patrick's Day weekend in University Heights, the Blue Streaks found a pot of gold, beating Albion, 18-10.

With the victory, John Carroll has now won two straight to even out at 3-3.

Albion announced themselves first, scoring two quick goals with 9:52 remaining in the first quarter. WIth a great spin move in front of the Albion net, Kendall Gessner, notched her 105th career goal, putting the Blue Streaks within one. However, the JCU defense was no match for the Albion offense, as they scored another quick goal, over the right shoulder of Josephine Lawler, making it a 3-1 game.

With a burst of speed, going coast to coast, freshman phenom Riley Knapp, scored to bring the Blue Streaks back to a one goal game. But keeping with the pattern, Albion answered just seconds later. Riley Knapp found the net twice before the end of the first quarter, making the score after quarter one, 5-3 in favor of the Britons.

The Blue Streaks controlled the second quarter, with Anna Spitzer, Olivia Hanulak (2), and Kathleen Cagney (2), combining for five JCU goals, heading into the half 9-8 lead over the Britons.

On the backend, Josephine Lawler stayed calm in net, totaling 5 saves throughout the first half.

JCU announced its presence early in the third quarter with Riley Knapp, Kendall Gessner, and Mary Grace Godleski notching 3 goals to extend the JCU lead to four. Keeping the momentum, Anna Spitzer found the twine for her second goal of the game, late in the 3rd quarter, and JCU went up 13-9, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Good defensive pressure from Meghan Weiner, Mary Wymard, and Amelia Pryharski allowed for the offense to thrive in the fourth quarter as another two goals brought the JCU lead to a game-high six, with the score 15-9 in favor of the Streaks.

At the end of regulation, the score was 18-10 in favor of the Blue Streaks.

Riley Knapp (4) and Karson Martin (4) combined for 8 goals, leading the Blue Streaks in scoring. Rachel Kroeger (4) and Josephine Lawler (5) combined for 9 saves to lead the Blue Streaks defensively.

Up next, JCU travels to Steubenville, OH to face off against Franciscian University on March 19th at 7 pm.
